D Adams has created my all time favorite character throughout literature - Of course it's Wonko the sane. Look him up like he was some safety instructions on your toothpick package.
When people say "how's it going", I say "Can't complain. Well, I could, but nobody ever listens, so you may as well not bother, and me with this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left side"...nobody ever gets it.
It should take one Altarian penny deposited into a long-term savings account for you to generate enough interest for it to pay for your meal by the time the universe ends
Reminds me of Genesis Rising: God had so much beef with a sentient rock that he created other life forms (where the only life form was supposed to be the sentient rock) and then expanded the universe beyond the reach of said sentient rock out of sheer spite.
Note: The UK TV series was based on the BBC Radio Show, that being is the original incarnation of THGG (even before the books) The UK TV series mostly used the same talent as the Radio show, and so those were the people in Douglas Adams mind as he finalized and tweaked the dialogue.
Not going to argue. It's a mystery to me why it doesn't get the attention the books (which are admittedly great) do. I had read the books for decades and was only vaguely aware of the radio play that they came from. When I finally listened to the radio version I was blown away and couldn't believe what I'd been missing.
Overall, yeah it was a let down, but the casting overall was spot on I think. Martin, Sam, Bill, and Most were all absolutely perfect for their rolls. Zooey was good too, but I think they wrote her too ditsy compared to the books (e.g. writing, not her). And Alan was so perfect for Marvin that I hear his voice when I read the books now.
I really warmed up to Zooey Deschanel as trillium. Mos Def I outright loathed at first but I found as I watched his performance a few times found him to be an inspired choice
It started well too. Felt like it went off the rails when they got picked up by Zaphod and Trillian and just never regained it's footing even when it went back to matching the book (e.g. Slarti and Earth 2.0).
I think Sam Rockwell was a bit I don't know violent for the choice of zaphod. He usually didn't do things out of malice, usually just out of sheer mindlessness.

If you've done 6 impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways the Restaurant at the End of the Universe?
CrazedDrifter
Before or after you create the alternate universe where you already have reservations?

That's only 2 impossible things so far, need another 4 before breakfast.

You can just make the reservation when you get back.

They all have their good points, and many of the differences are the author's idea. The movie is worth it just for the dolphin song imo.

It's a phenomenal radio play, with numerous reworkings in other media formats with varying degree's of quality.
TheOneTrueZippy8
If you are going to come here talking smack about the TV series then there is going to be a problem. And it is, for the originalists, a radio show.
ChloeRed
This comment just Fits in perfectly....
ChloeRed
(for the non-UK/radio geeky things, BBC Radio shows are known as "Fits", so the first HitchHikers are Fits 1-6)
TheOneTrueZippy8
Niche comment. I approve entirely.
ChloeRed
Friend of mine used to work for BBC OB repairs before they were spun off into it's own company, so lots of weird inside terms are in my head

Wait. I didn't know there's an older movie of it. What is this picture from?

There was a TV series in 1981.
TheOneTrueZippy8
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_(TV_series) The radio show was deemed "unfilmable"..... but they went and filmed it anyway. It is quite wonderful and one of the best ways to experience that part of the six part trilogy....... ummm.
Snooj
The BBC TV series. That's the one I'm familiar with; they showed it on PBS a million years ago.

6 part mini-series from BBC. I have a copy with 2 VHS tapes and it includes the first book.

Includes as in came with a copy of, or covers the material from? Because it covers the second book too.

I know. It drive people nuts. And then they gathered and had a drink called whiskey and soda but spelled completely different.

The UK series was 1000 times better than the movie.

The movie is what got many new viewers into the franchise. Even if the series are indeed better, do not dismiss the movie.

The dolphin bit was FAR superior in the series vs. The new movie.

Movie was fun too. different, but fun.

I think they shouldn't have tried. Five books in the trilogy, five movies.
