One thing about AI - if they can do it right and not screw everyone over, they could make some awesome cross overs. Like Lloyd Christmas and Ace Ventura team up to stp the Grinch and meet up with Stanley Ipkis along the way.
The Warriors was banned in many cities, including Boston where I lived. When I was visiting my cool uncle in NYC he took me to see it. Still my favorite uncle.
The imagery made me think, "Bronson meets the Guardian Angels". Totally would have teamed up with the Guardian Angels. For the curious, the GA we're these groovy vest wearing dudes that outwardly presented as gang-affiliated, but served as guardians and stewards of the needy back when NYC was a feckin' cesspool of violence (more than it is now).
The GA? My wife's mother was on the subways in NYC in that era (from the Bronx) and had nothing but praises. You were there - genuinely curious what stories were lost to time?
I was there back then I only visited NYC occasionally but my sister lived there. The guardian angels were not bad people but it was mostly a gimmick that got overblown by the tabloids
It always bothered me that the DJ was like “lol oops” but how many of those rival gangs are still listening to the radio at 5am or whenever they got back to Coney? Unless they’re saying it between every few songs for the next full day, the Warriors are still going to be getting shit.
I get why it would bother you but there's also no indication that the DJ *doesn't* do that, since the movie ends at that point. Plus I feel like if they have a city-wide radio communication system for the gangs, they probably have pretty decent communication in general.
Not like the other Warriors would care much. He was a loose canon since the start of the film. Not bad to have as an ally for fights but he showed he didn't want to listen to Swan so, he got what he got.
I'd recommend it to anyone BECAUSE of the slurs. Your children hears worse around the playgrounds. Also - don't you people have freedom of expression ?
Yeah. I really like the whole themed gang idea. Love to see the same idea done today. Honestly, you could do a retro future thing that would be pretty cool.
Ajax was the only Warrior who would have been dangerous to civilians. Non of them were going to fuck around with anyone in other gangs' turf if they could help it.
They're neoconservative backlash to a general liberalization going on during the 70s. It's fussy baby boomer nonsense about how they'd kick all the ass if their back wasn't causing trouble...
The 1970s and 80s had some of the highest rates of urban violent crime in American history. I think the Bronson movies were more of a reaction to that than anything else. This was before ppl started moving back to cities in the mid 90s when the tech industry started to boom. Most major cities today are WAY safer than they were 40 ish years ago.
The 'violent big city' movie trend was pretty popular (these days it's mostly super heroes creating havoc in the city). The Exterminator - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080707/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520exterminatorr - was a pretty good one, then ofc there's the dystopia versions, like 'Escape From New York'. I like the Warriors though, it's got a certain charm.
Which is strange, no one so far has marked the cause for the crime and violence spikes other than one that tracks with lead in gasoline and house hold materials.
Society is a very complex interaction. One mistake many people make is to search for a single cause, not for a complex interaction where many cofactors come together and interact with each other. There will be no one thing that caused it.
Of course, but studies have been trying to chase down contributing factors, and from what I recall in the past, that was listed as one of the better ones. Again, a lot was unclear.
David Patrick Kelly improvised that line on the spot, which was based on his personal experiences at the hands of a local bully in NY. It's the most-quoted line in the entire film!
Great reference :> (The Argument, Paradise Lost Book IV, when the two cherubim were like 'yo Satan you're an asshole and also you're ugly" and Satan was like "screw you guys y'all are mean also I'll have my own heaven with blackjack and hookers."
Fun Fact: The Warriors is a retelling of Xenophons Anabasis, a classical greek work about the perilous journey home from Mesopotamia of an army of greek mercenaries.
Actually, yes… it’s a retelling of tragic Ancient Greek tale about a romance between a Greek dancing soldier in the Athenian Dancing Division and the Daughter of a Persian general in their Tap Dancing Army… it’s a little different though because the original had a lot more rapping and hip hop, but it’s basically just different costumes and names in the end.
Funnest fact: During the Brandywine Bridge scene in "Fellowship of the Ring", Dominic Monaghan (Merry) got a giant wooden splinter in his foot that almost killed him due to blood loss.
I have never seen the movie. When i first stumbled over it, i found it was adapted from a book 1965 that was a retelling of Anabasis in a contemporary NY gang setting. NY gangs in the 60s actually had this kind of wild styles going on. There's an old docu on Youtube somewhere that led me to the Warriors movie in the first place. Anyways, that's how that book landed on my reading list.
Warriors is number 2 on my top 3 list. First one is The last Dragon with Taimak as Leroy Green, My third favorite is The Wanderers - 3 classics. I'm unsure if The Last Dragon is my #1 because of the music or the movie itself. The way it's scripted, it always reminds me of the first Superman movies with Christopher Reeve. I'm partial to the music, because that was the type of music i was DJ'ing on a few clubs around the city at the time. (Shows age, i know)
Don't lie to yourself. Last Dragon is top of the list because in 1985, Vanity was probably the sexiest human being on the planet. Well, that's my reason, anyhow

The opening credits to that movie is the basis to all the GTA Opening Credits, Rockstar even made a Warriors game.

I just rewatched "The Warriors" last week. Just as good as I remembered.

Charles Bronson, probably in Death Wish

Yeah. Ajax was a jackass.

Yes. Ajax was proven to be a rapist as he wouldn't take No for an answer. The Death Wish character absolutely would hunt and shoot a rapist.

I see this movie referenced just enough to be curious. How well does it hold up these days?

So good, try to find the theatrical version though. The director’s cut adds some wonky transitions.
