Midnight halo lan parties were the fucking best as a kid.
Fun fact: We had huge fights about screencheating. It escalated so much that we used our VCR to record our games. If someone was accused of cheating, we analysed the tape if cheating happened. It actually made the fights way way worse. It was great.

I made a custom mode for my friend and I to play, called it predator. Whoever had the most kills, would lose the ability to pick up weapons, and move a little slower, but they had a permanent cloak and a beam sword. Fun to see it hop from player to player, and you would feel like the monster you are if you kept it the whole game.

Shotty Snipes was by far the best

We cut up cardboard boxes and section off the screens so we couldn't screen cheat.
ronaldswanson2016
This is my favorite of the cross-overs so far
CringeL1fe
I learned to terminate network cables for those lan parties. Those skills paid off
TheBappin
In My group we would say "screen looker". It doesn't make sense tho because you have to look at the screen in order to play lol... but yeah we just accepted it as part of the deal when you split screen. It makes a players skill stand out more instead of everyone getting shot from behind. If 2 players know they are about to turn a corner and see each other then it all comes down to gun accuracy, reaction time and game knowledge choosing the right gun for the range your fighting at.

Shotties and Plasmas on Hang em High. Let's go.

My friend was a beast with the BR . . . I was a god with the Shotgun. Team Doubles Friday night from 6PM - 4AM were common & we were unstoppable...ok we were above average. God I miss the glory days of online gaming. Midnight release for Halo 2, 3, ODST, and reach. First 3 people to get 3 on Cape Cod. also the MC Helmet that fit a cat? Yeah it looked bad ass on my shelf! 4 was meh 5? Trash! But yeah team doubles or the fun random games. MC collection is fun but not the same as the good ol days.
DRONEPICS88
Lockout/Blackout is my favorite map for fun with swords v shotgun ;)
kerms
Not relevant in Infinite anymore since the shotgun is no longer one-shot kill.
modus0
Yet another reason, not to play Infinite.
Asgth
Have barely played Halo, played with a friend a couple times back in the day and he loved Halo and constantly played it, he always ran at me Monty Python style with the energy sword because he thought it was super strong and cool since it 1shot, i always had a shotgun and the magnum on me (magnum was good in that game) so he constantly ate shit despite having easily 50 times my playtime.
Drives11
Man do I miss halo, especially the pre-game & post-game lobbies. Honestly, if 343 just added the party up system again that would solve 90% of my grips with MCC's multiplayer matchmaking. Instead it's all 1&done games because 343 couldn't be bothered to include such a basic feature.
LucidPariah
You want to talk about cheating looking at other people's screens in multiplayer!?

That energy is incredible.

Thank you!

My group had a whole game where you had to screenwatch to win: Everyone was invisible, had unlimited grenades and rockets with over-shields on the map. We called it “Drunk Rocket” and it never disappointed
CopyJedi666
I had several profiles and my golden short term one was named "ShottyNoob" and i made that my weapon of choice because of living dead and shotty snipes
GyprockGypsy
Dude got the shotty. The only thing that beats that is the magnum.
Darkspire
The magnum was the answer to pretty much everything. Miss that ole beast
SodomySnake
Swords on Lockout was our go-to.
Aksuuuh
Lockout was a total gem.
OpieDokie
I've played Halo since it first came out and, still, I fail to one-shot mfers with a shotgun like my friends used to against me. I have no idea how that shit works and at this point I'm too afraid to ask.
FTUG
I used to have to play 1v3 in the other room to make it fair to my friends, still was a slaughter but was all in good fun

I just tubed noobed eveyone. And sniping, or just flatten a group in a warthog.
DrSirSexyLegs
And now since Infinite replaced the original shotgun with the Bulldog, they took away the energy swords direct counter. And no, the gravity hammer isn't a counter to the energy sword because it's far too slow.
NationalistCanadianMooseWarrior
I have a lot of fun with the bulldog, but there is *nothing* more satisfying than hearing that "BULLTRUE" as the last man standing in a game of zombies.... Good times.
DrSirSexyLegs
It's not that I dislike the Bulldog, it's more the over balancing of modern online games. In older Halo games you had weapons that were direct counters of each other sniper/beam rifle, rocket launcher/fuel rod, energy sword/shotgun and you didn't worry about the balance of weapons that aren't meant to be counters of each other. Now everything has to be balanced in relation to everything else or the competitive communities whine that people are killing too fast with a more specialized weapon.
DrSirSexyLegs
If you play the most recent COD, pretty much every gun is the same with little differences hear and there in recoil pattern, ADS speed, reload, etc. COD isn't the best example IMO because it has more potential to abuse OP weapons but Halo has always been more of a rock, paper, scissors type playstyle. Since Halo 5 and Infinite, with the push towards being like other FPS games, Halo I feel has lost what makes Halo, Halo.
LupusLilium
I dislike the Bulldog, because too many people are like 'but it only takes two shots'. Except that's the problem. The OG shotgun meant the moment you 'locked' onto someone with a sword within range they were dead. The Bulldog requires you to have seen them before they enter the max effective range, and two shots at that range won't kill, so you hit them at the weakest range and then if you're quick you get that second shot. If you aren't, you're -always- dead because the sword doesn't miss.

Oh man I remember that one, 9/10 when I'd get it the very next thing I'd hear is someone spitting out swears.

So satisfying. Shotty and swords, let's all just go Rambo

I liked shotty snipers. I never used the shotgun and could usually no scope headshot at close range.

Shotty swords in the tower.

Millions of deaths caused by that turret
MajorasTerribleFate
I hopped from the central platform to the non-elevator tower while another guy was making the opposite jump, passing on my left. I reflexively hit the grenade button, and his screen goes chaotic blue. Somehow I'd planted a plasma grenade on his face.

This. Quick-scoping a headshot was way more satisfying and added insult to injury.

Custom browser lobbies are pretty great on MCC and Inf are honestly pretty great today. Lots of old school remakes

Screen looking is not only part of the game it is the BEST part of the game. Knowing exactly were your opponent is at all times makes halo a game of perfect information, just like chess.
peruvianfightingmidgets
Screen looking? We call that screen cheating round here
YourSelfMan
That’s why you look at the ground to make it harder to tell where you are. May the better man win.
DrPepperIsMyGP
We discouraged camping across all platforms. Trust but verify was the phrase back then. If you were caught, your location would be shouted out. [drums in the deep]
RingyDingy
I have a game on Steam called... Screencheat, can only play it locally but everybody is invisible to each other so in order to figure out where everybody is you have to look at their screens. It's pretty great
DeltaBladeX
That is a good one, though wish I had people to play it with locally.
andyQpants
Agree. We always allowed it since everyone else has access to look at the screen as well. Reduced camping. Don't like it, Git good!
TippLite
Yep, everyone had equal opportunity to use it. Not my fault if you refuse to screen-watch. I got pretty good at precision frag grenade throws from across the map.
oliharris19697
Cheating implies you have an advantage that your opponent does not have.
zenprime
I never had the consoles growing up, but I was always good at watching the entire screen while playing. As soon as I learned the map, I became a real threat to my friends. Was always kinda neat watching myself kill them as I killed them.
RowanUnderwood
Insert City of Lost Children reference here . . .
sullafelix22
Screen-WATCHING! It’s very comical that there are so many different names for the same phenomenon
DeinnsBeans
We called it ScreenPeeking lol
DeinnsBeans
*gets killed when they shouldn’t have know I was there* “STAWP FUKKIN SCREENPEEKIN!”
Aksuuuh
We tried it but we found it not being as fun that way.
DoggMan
Screen watching was an art. Throwing the perfect grenade while watching 2 screens at once, grabbing the water gun (plasma rifle) to meet the shotty overshield guy on chill out (loved the rage scream they would make), or playing a game of chicken with a sniper. I was an omniscient god. I preferred to play on a smaller screen with more teammates to know exactly what was happening and where.
BarbedWireCatheter
I didnt realize how much games needed screencheating to be fun until I tried COD online. Slow as fucking molasses when you don’t know where everyone is all the time
TheMasterDB8er
If you think games need screencheating to be fun, you need to either practice more, get used to losing, or just play different games. I won’t say you or anyone else are bad or annoying for screencheating because it is definitely a valid tactic in split screen play. But to say a game needs it is just admitting you’re kinda bad
BarbedWireCatheter
I mean, I still played, I just thought the pacing was too slow. Except Bioshock 2, if you can believe it. That was the craziest multiplayer I’ve ever seen.
demoncatmara
What is screencheating?
Aksuuuh
In a local split-screen game. Looking at a screen that's not yours to see where they're located for a kill/avoiding to get killed.
demoncatmara
Oh wow, I'd never have considered that cheating - I mean, the other player can see your screen too, so no one has an unfair advantage. Used to play a lot of Quake 2 on N64, split-screen, was super intense and fun as hell
YourSelfMan
Screen peeking
demoncatmara
Is there any way to avoid this? I guess polarised glasses could do the trick cheaply
iDrinkDrano
CRT TVs, mind you
YourSelfMan
System link is the best way. Or make a custom barrier out of cardboard i guess.
