Alright, here is a glimpse into a day in the life of me, a unionized certified forklift driver.

Aug 28, 2023 11:20 PM

The day starts early at 6:00 am. Shift starts at 7:30 am and I hate being rushed in the morning. I used to work evenings, only thing I miss about that shift was not having to get up in the morning.

Last part of my morning routine is making my energy drink for later. I HATE coffee and tea just dosen't have the same kick. Found this stuff, mix with water and go. Tastes really good actually. No sugar either. If I don't make breakfast, I've been going to McDonald's or Hardee's both only a couple blocks away. My drive to the factory from my apartment is about 3-5 minutes.

And here we arrive at work. I don't want to say exactly where it is I work. Just that it is a plastic packaging manufacturer. The plant is union for all hourly employees. I work in the warehouse and drive this beast or one of the other forklifts. We're getting brand, spanking new forklifts next month. $35k a truck. I have a whole variety of duties depending on my station for the week. Too many to list here.

My shift ends at 4 pm. No mandatory OT this week. Though since we're a union plant the 1.5x pay is guaranteed for anything over 8 hours a day, not by the week. I come home and chill. Then I start dinner. Been using Hello Fresh for about a year now. It's not perfect but they do have some really delicious meals, and I've been learning how to really cook and portion control.

During dinner I usually stream something. I've been getting caught up on a lot, have a subscription to nearly every streaming app. It'll suck this fall without any new shows, but I am 100% in my support for my union brothers and sisters in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. It's a minor inconvenience that's easily weathered for labor justice and fair pay. I know from first hand experience, in two CBA negotiations, just how insulting and contemptible management can be. They do not see workers as human beings. Going to stop there, that story is for another post at another time.

My other option for winding down is finishing some of these LEGO sets. When I want to avoid any screen time and just focus on a simple, rewarding task.

Lastly, I usually try to get a few chapters read at night of whatever book I'm reading. I'm just starting this new High Republic series. I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan so this intrigues me. Well that's all I've got, if you made it this far, you must be bored. Thanks for reading. Any questions or if you want to start a nerd debate in the comments, I'm game.

Edit: Holy shit! First time ever getting a most viral! Thanks everyone. Long time lurker, in frequent poster. I'm impressed.

@OP I too am forklift certified. However, my job is not unionized unfortunately though they aren't too bad to work for. Also VERY glad you're getting new trucks brother, as that one looks pretty rough. We use crown 5500s with clamps instead of forks, but same basic control setup.

Lift on, sir!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You had me at "unionized"

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or whatever it is you're into, I'm sure the cert gets you all the action.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Excellent Lego choices and that is a good Star Wars book. Maybe a little slow since there is a lot of set up and new characters but the High Republic era is great!

Hey. You like space and Sci-fi? If you haven't, play Outer Wilds. Don't look up anything about it, just know it's a space adventure mystery game that you must avoid all spoilers for. Any information you learn about is information you will never be able to discover by yourself. IF YOU COMMENT ON THIS, AVOID ALL SPOILERS FOR OP AND YOUR OWN SAKE.

I'm a union forklift driver with a series x and build Legos as well. Weird.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I am also certified, but non-union. I gotta be up at 5, and be at work before 6. I also refuse to wake up at a time that starts with 4:xx, so I AM rushed in the morning XD

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why would you drive for 3/5 minutes, when you can just as easily walk 10 min? It seems such a waste...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One is the large and very steep hill I traverse everyday, the town I live in was started along the Minnesota River in the river valley, has since expanded up hill to the plains and farmland on the Hilltop. It's probably 4 miles or so of a drive. Second is its Minnesota, don't know where you're from but our winter is at least 6 months long. Ever been in Minnesota in January or February? You don't walk much outside then. Not if you can avoid it.

Do you like being a part of a union? I wish I had one for my profession. Especially to get 1.5x for OT? I think that’s pretty nice.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It definitely has its advantages, guaranteed OT pay being one. Excellent health insurance coverage as well, but thats not always true with all union jobs. Dues are $50 a month, so about 2 hours pay. A few years ago I had some serious health issues, missed nearly 4 months of work. Used up my FMLA time, but the union kept my job for me.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m sorry you had health issues. Are you doing better? That’s nice that they saved your job for you at least.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He’s obviously modest. He didn’t tell of the 40+ women that begged him for a child today.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, bro. Couldn’t resist. /gallery/5xLCQvl

I was going to say, how can I get to this particular alternate reality? Though, real talk, I'm too tall and too fat to fit in any kind sports car. Thanks for the laugh though.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You don’t need to fit. You’re forklift certified. The car will recognize this, and change its internal dimensions out of respect.

I always wondered... why is "unionized" is part of the job title? In what backwards ass country isn't that the default? Sounds like saying "wet water" to me tbh

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh this isn't the place to give you a lesson on the often bloody history of organized labor in this country. Its ugly, brutal, violent, depressing, hopeful, and soul crushing.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

USA: In 2022, 10.1% of workers were in a union. I've never worked at a place with a union; all have been quite anti-union, and even a significant number of the workers were anti-union. Sucks here.

If you need something to do if/when streaming runs out of content due to the strikes, I heartily recommend some of the old Star Wars RPGs, especially Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel, which should run just fine on about any computer, and hold up well despite being old games.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been there done that on the OG Xbox. They were great, actually they're both backwards compatible on my series X. I have my copy of Starfield already downloaded. It'll get unlocked at 8pm Wednesday. I've got my Labor Day weekend planned now.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I work at a union shop, our day starts at 6am cause we're on east coast time. I'm in IT though, so not in the union. We're still backed up from the rail strike, probably will be into January. I hope they get what they need next time so we don't have this kind of impact again.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so no one's gonna mention the fuckton of money this guy makes to be able to afford all those lego sets. classy, i like it

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not a fuckton of money, just never married, no kids, no social life and I live in a small city in Southern Minnesota.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

3 money and no kids. same...same :)

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'll admit I read it as "un-ionized" rather than "union-ized", so I was very confused for a moment. Thanks for the preview, though, op!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reading the High Republic series, eh? You meet Geode yet?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How hard is it to become certified? How hard is it on your body? How do you like it, overall? How’s the pay? (I always love learning about other people’s experiences.)

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm certified through my employer, they have thier own training program. Its not difficult. Those stand up style trucks I use the controls work just like an FPS on your Xbox or Playstation controller. Seriously, one stick for direction the other for movement. Driving it does take a toll, no shocks at all. And you have to stand in a twisted stance. My actual job I fucking hate it, but thats more to do with mgmt. being incompetent. I stay for the amazing health ins. and decent pay. $23 hr.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I kid you not, we have similar lifestyles. 6am waking up, off at 4pm, dislike coffee, currently doing hello fresh, and have a bunch Lego sets queued. I just don’t drive a fork lift, not in a union and probably not your pay.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Great minds and all that. I'm at $23 an hour. Pretty good pay for flyover country here in the midwest. What do you do for a living and where do you live?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Las Vegas here, currently got a job as administrative assistant, $22/hr. It’s okay, needed a steady job. Searching for a PT though as well. What parts of the Midwest are you from?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Southern Minnesota, small city of Mankato. Its about an hour and a half south of Minneapolis. Definitely a different climate from Vegas.

I keep trying to get our EHS manager to watch this video. I want to include it in our training program.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I stopped at hating coffee. The forklift drivers I've worked with downed two scalding cups of black coffee and chain-smoked 3 cigarettes before they set foot on their Hyster.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I work with a guy who fits that description.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

+1 but wouldn't it ackshually be a geek debate?

Suppose it depends on the topic?

Non union certified forktruck driver here 👋

Uncertified forklift driver here. Working in the Caribbean really shows why osha is important.

Episodes 7, 8, and 9 of the Skywalker trilogy were all trash.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

7 was alright, 8 and 9 were garbage though. Pointless storyline and way too many plot holes.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah 7 was ok (trash for that one was a little harsh). Honestly just too many characters and too much time spent trying to make us care about them. Should have spent more time focusing on a good story and let that do the work. Although I think JJ was thinking he'd have 2 more films to round things out.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Solo was a better movie than those 3.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I enjoyed solo. I mean it was easy too dark to see much a lot of the time, but it had the swashbuckling friends adventure feel I love in the original trilogy, even if the fan service was a bit groan worthy

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty much sums exactly how I felt about it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I drove a forklift for a few years. Which is amazing. Because I think I was around 16 years old. Somehow I didn't create Mass Carnage

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm fortunate that I haven't hit our broken anything of value or that was meant to be hit. Some of my coworkers though......

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, I do remember the company bought a whole bunch of brand new Yale forklifts. They handed one over to me in the first time I used it one of the hydraulic hoses came off and sprayed hydraulic fluid all over the floor. I was not aware of it and some lady slipped in it. I felt pretty bad about it

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

High republic was very boring and forgettable imo, I needed a pallet cleanser after it and read Master and Apprentice by Claudia Grey, which was excellent. I thought it was pretty funny that when HR first came out it was very highly promoted but it had its work cut out since it came out when one of the Thrawn Ascendancy books came out, which is hard to complete with, justifiably.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats interesting. I haven't started the book yet. The Thrawn Ascendancy is on my list, just I'm old enough to have read and own the original Thrawn trilogy. Even had all three 1st edition paperbacks signed by Timothy Zahn at Celebration 2019 in Chicago. Wonder how it'll compare.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, Id do the other Thrawn trilogy (Thrawn, Thrawn: Alliances, Thrawn: Treason) first before Ascendancy

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I also own a couple Zahn signed Thrawn books :)

Forklift certified and in a union?? Damn bro, save some pussy (or dick or whatever) for the rest of us.

2 years ago | Likes 360 Dislikes 2

As a former Union ups driver- we got a lot of pussy. I can’t imagine what a certified forklift driver is wading through. That’s just too much for any one man.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

There are dozens of us! (Union member, forklift certified, but definitely in a different field of work)

Hey, legit question from a tech worker with absolutely no union xp or understanding. You said your shop is unionized for all hourly workers. What happens if someone is promoted to a salaried and/or managerial position? Are they kicked out of the union? Are they now a union spy in management? Or does it just not happen enough to matter or establish a pattern? I'm genuinely curious. I've wanted tech unions for decades, but a year ago, i got promoted to middle management, and now i wonder.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Where I work if you become management (not supervisors, they are still union members), you are no longer in the union. It’s considered a conflict of interest.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that makes sense at a certain level, and i'm sure it's different for each "shop". Thanks for sharing your experience.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Honestly dosen't happen very much, at least not in my facility. Mgmt. won't hire from the union to other management positions. They just don't do it. As for the other salaried positions, yes they leave the union, because the CBA only covers certain jobs within the company. We have CS and tooling design people that are not union members, but not management either. Their positions were created after the union was founded. The plant used to be a printing and cardboard box factory.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ex-CWA here. I started as hourly union, moved into middle management, then moved back and became heavily involved in the union shop. Managers and salaried employees (like 99.9% of the time) aren't union. Everyone treats moving into management differently, but I used my role to get as many new hires to pay dues as I could in our right to work state. Happy to answer more questions if you're curious, starting a union is worth it!

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You said you joined mgmt, then 'moved back'. Does that mean you were not a union member while employed as management? Also, was your use of the role to drive union sign-ups part of why you moved or were moved out of management?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Correct, as I said almost all management and salaried employees are not union eligible. That applies universally. I voluntarily moved out of management because I got a 20k raise and less responsibility to become occupational again lol Management roles fuckin suck
