Okay, him doing the voice of Smaug on the spot like that was pretty amazing, simply because I always thought there was some HEAVY audio editing done to get his voice to project like in the movie. Like, something he could never do in person, yet here he did it.
I think it’s really cool that despite it using none of the original motion capture or original voice lines, the initial method acting experiments likely flavoured and led to the movement and voice and various feel of the character to glue together. Just the type of voice you’d be able bellow with your lungs in a specific four legged position is impossible to find unless you actually take that position. The Smaug scenes are despite heavy CG still the most immersive parts of the hobbit trilogy imo
100% the animation team used the mocap footage as a reference while working on those scenes to give some of BC's personality to Smaug. Probably translated all of his physicality from the waist up into Smaug's head and neck.
I swear the ending of hobbits 2 is gold. BC saying "I am fire, I am... Death" and then I See Fire by Ed Sheeran plays after is why i love it more than the 1st/3rd.
I had no idea he voiced smaug. That's the problem with voice acting. If the actor does a completely different voice then you're used to hearing come from them, then you have no idea it was them. OTOH that means they did a great job voice acting. On the other hand it could have been a complete rando person and i wouldn't know.
I'd rather a good performance where the actor bodies the character than a mediocre performance where in expected to appreciate their star power associated with the role.
This will forever be one of the best interviews anyone has ever done, figures it would be a comedian doing it. Simon Pegg is just awesome in anything he does.
It's really too bad that peter jackson has kind of silently quit film making and doesn't work on much now. I am not sure what contributed to it, but after lotr you had kong and hobbit and nothing really hit.
I went and saw LOTR in theaters recently and before every film Peter had a sort of 10 minute Vlog where he talked about the film. Something that stood out to me is that he was talking about his DP on LotR, Andrew Lesnie, and how much he enjoyed working with him, what a special relationship they had. Really seemed like a dear friend. He mentioned that Lesnie died in 2015, after The Hobbit released, and Peter seemed to realize in the vlog that he didn't want to work without him. That might be it.
He pretty much outright said "I suppose I've been avoiding directing a new movie since he died because I'm afraid of making one without him." I forget his exact words, something like that. Commented on how his films since then have been documentaries and whatnot

He was a badass in Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness! Loved it when he wore the dead like a cape.

Funny, cuz Colbert is a huge fan of the movies and has a cameo as well. It's very quick, but when the party first arrives in Rivertown
