#1 why is this person wearing a glove, and why don't they want to get their fingers wet??
TheHillsHaveNostrils
Because handling sand and rock dries out and scratches your skin. A thin glove like that will protect from slight abrasion, but not really from cold.

#21 Why tf do we not have this technology anymore? I'd rather have this than "smart" features tbh.
Haemaelaeinen
Because those shelves will break. There is a reason most of stuff like that qent the way of the dodo. They were shitty gimmicks.
MichikoTheJungleFox
Well then invest the R&D into making them more durable instead of smart features, which I feel are an even bigger, shittier gimmick. I really don't need my fridge to connect to Wi-Fi and talk to me or play Skyrim or whatever.
Haemaelaeinen
A normal shelf is better than those. They are easy to remove and wash. Literally don't need anything else. Smart features are stupid, luckily cheap fridges don't have them and they cool just as well. Only reason for smart shit is to easily create "value" to otherwise simple appliances. It is customer's fault for buying overpriced crap when cheaper and in this way better alternatives exist. Just because something is expensive doesnt mean it is better.

nice find. i'm truly jealous.
idiotsonfire
What even is it?
JetrelPixelArt
Apparently: "Yooperlites are syenite rocks rich in fluorescent sodalite that glow vibrant orange or yellow under UV light, discovered in 2017 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Primarily found along Lake Superior, they are collected as curiosities, jewelry, or for polishing. They are not rare but require a 365nm UV light for discovery, especially after storms."

#21 Receipt shows total price as $497 with the ice maker. Assuming US, that equals $5,282.69 today, according to the BLS inflation calculator.
cyrusthevyrus
The video doesn't give the cubic feet, but you can get a decent fridge with a bottom drawer freezer and ice maker for $1500 today. Admittedly, the push button slide adjustment for the shelves is a nice feature that most refrigerators don't have now. You wouldn't have to take everything off the shelf to adjust it, as long as it wasn't too heavy.
Plastic/glass shelves with spill guards are much better, though, in terms of cleaning.
Whatwhatsomethingbutt
Expensive, but you only needed to buy one. Now your appliances break every 5 years and yeah, you can learn appliance repair in your limited free time or you can pay somebody $150 just to look at it, but I shouldn't fucking have to. Things should just work.
elmesito
Survivor bias is a thing, otherwise there would be hundreds of thousands of those refrigerators still around and no market for new ones.
These days if you buy more expensive brands such as Miele they come with a 10 year warranty at least here in Europe, but most are not willing to pay that much for an appliance.
cyrusthevyrus
Yeah, I try to tell people that about cars. We have no idea if some new appliances will last for 50 years, because it hasn't been that long yet, lol.
We did have a huge chest freezer from the 1960's in our basement until it died a few years ago. The lid alone was so heavy that you needed both hands to open it and used a hook hanging from a floor joist to hold it open.
ZOMGNO
Miele is a great brand (saying from NZ.) My husband was a package deal... he came with a bunch of Bosch appliances. I hate to jinx things, but they're all really, really good at not breaking. Fridge, Washer, Dryer... all 12+ years. There are plenty of quality appliances out there... but you have to buy better than the cheapest option.
elmesito
You chose your husband wisely.
Bosch, Miele and even AEG have been very reliable in my experience. Years ago I bought an Indesit dishwasher and it stopped working the week after the warranty run out. I tried to fix it, but the new part required programming with specialist equipment. So I replaced it with a second hand Bosch of unknown age, and that survived my ex for another seven years after our relationship broke down. My current dishwasher is a Miele bought second hand.
ZOMGNO
I've never used AEG, but noted. My ex was CRAZY in love with Miele, and gotta say... they were great in my experience. I think I'm stuck with Bosch things, but i'm sold. We had a washing machine rubber ring thing fail.... we looked up the repairs, found an authorised dealer, and spent about 150 to buy the part... replaced and it worked perfectly. Good brands still exist and their things last when you take care of them.

So bloody true
mjcherbert
because astrophysics - southern hemisphere summer is hotter because the planet is tilted toward the sun, so far so normal, but it's _also_ at the point in our (slightly) elliptical orbit where the planet is _closer_to_the_sun_ so it's a double-whammy ...
astrangehop
Your ancestors colonized hell and I don't feel bad for you.

I am spending only an hour outside a day and I still feel every inch that I don’t slather with sunscreen T-T
Thiccperson
So are AZ and CO in the states, tbh
ZOMGNO
Yeah no, they don't have the ozone hole over them. I'm a Kiwi and i spent an entire day running around in the sun in Summer in Arizona and i got a vague tan. I spend an hour outside at midday in Summer in NZ? I am BURNED. So yes, it is hot... but the skin cancer and burn rate is not the same thing.
DJBigTed
Definitely worse than many places, but not nearly as bad as it was 20 years ago - the hole is slowly healing.
ZOMGNO
It really is, it is amazing to have noticed the difference in my own lifetime. Maybe in another 20 years... kids won't have a higher risk of skin cancer just by playing outside at lunchtime.
SpeedbumpNZ
I'd imagine CO to be so, because of the altitude. AZ, because it's south and hot?
trigonman3
111°F = 43.9°C

SpeedbumpNZ
That's pretty hot. Temperatures don't go that high here.
Thiccperson
Phoenix is aptly named, as it is on fire, and I grew up there with ivory-ass skin. Now I'm in sunny high-altitude, which is actually worse for sunburns lol

Excuse me?
isetprettygirlsonfire
As a geologist, please don't use that name. It all plays into a scammer trying to pattent a "new" rock, which was already known to science. Then he sues people. It is syenite with fluorescent sodalite. Don't feed the geifters
RyvaTheRenamon
How the fuck do you patent a fucking rock
l4ngos
This is the stupidest timeline.
cyrusthevyrus
I'm not playing devil's advocate here, just a question. Aren't some rocks named after the location where they're found if they have a unique mineral composition? For example, the granite quarried in Mount Airy, NC has been referred to as Mount Airy granite and Mount Airy granodiorite. It's appearance is pretty distinctive.
Does the syenite with sodalite found in the Upper Peninsula area have a unique composition, or is it basically the same as in other places in the world?
isetprettygirlsonfire
Colloquial and common names for rocks are very common. If everyone called them yooperlites, I would think it was cool, fitting and fun name. But it is the shady business practices most have issue with. Syanite is basically like granite, but a different mineral combination, it has a specific mineral percentage. The fluorescent part is less common, but not unique. And it doesn't originate in the US, it's source is in Alberta.
It was first claimed to be a new rock, but geologists repeatedly 1/
isetprettygirlsonfire
told him it isn't anything new and it already had a name. He didn't like that answer and went on a rampage for a while, not he just sells them on ebay at inflated prices and sues anyone who tried to use that name.

Interesting. And where does one find this magic rock? Is there something special about the flashlight? Like a black-light filter? Or is it just a regular flashlight shining on rocks in a random stream?
anjeer
They're on the southern shores of Lake Superior, originally found around Whitefish Point, just west of Sault Ste. Marie.
The flashlight is a UV, which the embedded sodalite reacts to by fluorescing.
Grendels2dCousinOnceRemoved
I wonder: are they common enough that if I took a few days, with the right kind of light, and just wandered that part of the lakeshore, would I be likely to find some? Just how common are these stones?
isetprettygirlsonfire
The source is in alberta and were moved along there to the great lakes area. It is a UV light a black light filter doesn't produce enough UV. There are a lot of fluorescent minerals that glow in UV though (and all scorpions too). A UV light can be fun to lok around at night
TK421isAFK

https://www.ironmountaindailynews.com/news/local-news/2019/07/rock-fight-local-man-in-dispute-over-glowing-stones/
Looking into the lawsuit thing, the dude is literally doing what trademark law demands to protect a trademark.
It ain't nice, but the law is "Be an ass or lose your claim."
The UV filter lawsuit, the only other thing that comes up, looks like it's from a standard patent troll, not the yooperlite guy.
isetprettygirlsonfire
Trademarking a rock name because he got shot down as a new mineral name. That's where his slimy behavior started. He pretends he discovered or invented something
cyrusthevyrus
"If I did not trademark, I would’ve been sued for $360,000 for using a word that I invented,” Rintamaki said. “The technical term for these stones is a syenite rich in fluorescent sodalite. Yooperlite is my brand of fluorescent sodalite from Michigan.”
Why would he have been sued if he didn't trademark the name?
isetprettygirlsonfire
MAGA logic
cyrusthevyrus
Sooo... Does that mean he thinks someone else (like the guy he's suing) would have trademarked the name for profit and basically steal his business? The news article says the guy he's suing has been trying to raise money to trademark a different name for these rocks.
I'm not trying to imply that I disagree with you...you just seem to know more about this story than what is in the article, so I'm curious.
