It's because they are designed for mobile format. And I'm typing this from a computer with quad 27" monitors...I used to hate it too, but the reality is the majority of content (I think it was 70% last I checked) is consumed on a mobile device and while you CAN rotate, the reality is most people don't and don't want to.
