I notice many polls will show the margin of error, but rarely the actual group size that was polled. A lot of them are only 200-2000 people that are theoretically a cross-section of different backgrounds and positions, but who knows?

Remember that polls are selective for people who answer polls. Older people are more likely to answer polls and older people are more likely to be "conservative".

Well, PhD statistician here- given known sampling weights one can at least make an effort at reweighing for representativeness. Few high quality surveys are perfectly representative without weighting.
