It's all going to be nuked to shit by a few genocidal madmen anyway.

It's a globe because the earth is spherical and it represents the axial tilt in solar orbit. Unwrapping a sphere onto a flat plane will cause distortions from reality no matter how you present it but you can't put a ball into a book. The center of a map is just based on the hemispherical and regional bias of the person designing maps at the time. Flat Earthers have already done enough damage to education so the globe's presence in a classroom doesn't hurt.

Came down here to read map nerd talk. I love all the little map nerds in my phone.

Fuck Russia

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At first I thought this would be a flat-world parody.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"globes" and "maps" are two quite different things

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One issue that is generally not addressed with globes is that the scaling of continents/countries is not accurate.

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

This is just like, your opinion, man.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"You may believe the globe ist the most accurate" then continues to make not a single point to argue with that. Although there are actually points to argue it.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bucky Fuller! Yaaaay

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Of course the triangle map is made by Mr Buckyball.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That map is completely fucking useless.

1 day ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Dozens

On the topic of favorite map projections, someone here on Imgur once mentioned Eckert IV as their favorite, and I think they convinced me about that.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We need to see the globe from the ocean view now!

19 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See proof right there the earth is flat! /S

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the stupidest map I've ever seen. Flat Earthers probably love it though

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait so thats the original bucky ball?

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So the suggestion is basically switching from an European centric view to an American centric view

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless you are navigating the oceans.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a terrible map, you can't just look at it and work out where any two distant points are in relation to each other without mentally trying to rebuild a globe.

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This just looks like a normal map to me (I'm a Battletech fan and the surfaces of planets are often depicted with dymaxion maps)

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like the Mertater Projection

2 days ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 0

May I offer the butterfly projection:

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

'yeah, I live on one of the smaller chip shards, you probably never heard of it'

2 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

What’s projections precious?

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It has very crisp edges.

That guy likes shoes with toes apparently

1 day ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's ALWAYS an xkcd.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder what this guy thinks about the Waterman butterfly?

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh snap! I’ve never seen this xkcd! I need to go back through the entire archive at some point in my sad little life.

How do I favorite a comment?

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I totally forgot about that one!

1 day ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is a fever dream sold as 'the best' way. Globes are better for 1. Showing topagraphy. 2. Shortest distance between two locations is NOT a straight line. 3. Showing time zones better proportion to light. I dunno man this is right up there flat earthee shit to me. It breaks down quickly when you think about it.

1 day ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ugh. I'm getting pretty over the fucking Interstellar theme JFC

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Useful as a visual representation of the world on a flat surface, but terrible as a map. It complete distorted N/S/E/W so trying to use it to navigate would be impossible.

1 day ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Who the fuck uses a world map to navigate? Also, the North/South axis being set like it is is purely due to arrogance and racism. Given where humanity started, it would make more sense for Antarctica to be at the top, but that would make Europe seem less important.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is no "perfect" or "best" map. It depends on the porpuse

2 days ago | Likes 223 Dislikes 3

Exactly. The Mercator cops a lot of heat due to pop-culture, but it is perfect for navigation - which was its entire intended purpose.

1 day ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

Bottle nose or beluga?

1 day ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Exactly. this is stupid and actually makes it harder to understand

1 day ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Yep, and this map really sucks for aot of those reason. Oceanic shipping lanes? Go fuck yourself.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes, purpose...

The reason why the US purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire was to run a telegram cable all the way from North America, across Siberia, to Europe. They thought that this would be easier than doing a trans-Atlantic cable.

2 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

The main motivations for the purchase were economic resources, strategic positioning in the Pacific, and Russia's financial struggles. Alaska’s role in the telegraph plan was secondary to these larger goals.

you can basically walk to anywhere, excluding some islands, and Australia.. but that's not a real place...

2 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My country isn't a real place, that's why I shacked up in ya mum's bedroom.

1 day ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

musta been a bit crunchy after all those years in the ground...

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do you think it's called "down under"?

That origami doesn't play nice with time.

This is where I thought, for a brief moment in time, that Google Earth was going to go. Merging Google Earth and Wikipedia just made so much sense to me. Ah well. This looks sick as fuck and I'll play your game just to mess around with this map. Thankyougoodday.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the Himalayas happened DUE TO India's collision with Asia. They were not there before the collision.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Indeed. The technique I'm using targets phones and prioritizes fast load and good frame rates. I move the tectonic plates as rigid geometry, but I don't deform the surface. Around 300 Mya, the region between Florida, South America and Africa used to be a mountain range. Andes and Rocky Mountains also raised as the Americas drifted west. If you want a more scientific visualization: https://www.earthbyte.org/paleomap-paleoatlas-for-gplates/ - You'll find lots of cool data sources.

A game I'm trying to make: JurassicRally.com - The continental drift thingy is going to be the level selection: https://youtu.be/yLRfiAejSCs

Thanks, I hope you'll succeed ! <3

Indie devs are a particular sort of people.

“This thing that I could sell as a $3,000 museum display is going to be the first 12 seconds of a game and nobody will think about it again.”

Wut fuckin' game?
