Basically, AI is going to tear society or shreds, but it’s okay because if we don’t do it, the other guys will.
Sure is great to have unaccountable psychopaths in charge of everything, isn’t it?

When the needs of the people aren’t being met and material conditions worsen, the people overthrow the government anyway. So these freaks are tilting at windmills because what they offer only further degrades material conditions. There’s a reason they game out situations where the poors rise up against them in their Eyes Wide Shut parties.
The Constitution and America are temporary. These freaks are stupid and don’t understand that. They will always lose on a long enough timeline.

I implore a man to come train an AI to do my job more efficiently and effectively than I can do it. These bozos don't realize they're already paying me less than what it will cost to constantly train and maintain a fully automated process to take over my job. Please please please I dare y'all
AndroidSoul
The only problem with this is that all the business majors running your company will ignore that cost because they can pretend it doesn't exist, fire you, create a huge debacle finding out, and then hire you back at 50% pay while still having to do 90% of the work
Huor
More efficiently and effectively? How about ... more cheaply?

AI is ultimately a dead end. The data it scrapes will eventually be 100% AI generated data from bots interacting on the dead Internet.
The "old" Internet is almost a dead zone already, so much AI slop and ShatGPT, bots and paid agitators.
The real master of the future and tech is whoever develops a useable alternative to to the internet.
Might just take going back to the old decentralized ways.

When I was an edgy college teen, I used to say US needed a literal civil war to get rid of Republicans or they'd become Nazi Germany 2.0. I probably need to apologise to Nazi Germany cos if Trump doesn't literally get ousted, it's gonna somehow be so much stupider. Its one thing to fill everyone with propaganda, but he does this in the open, practically taunting his own ppl and he still gets away with it.
IamMadeOfShamrocks
Dude the Nazis aren’t reviled because they were stupid. They are hated because they wanted to take over the planet and liquidate or enslave sections of the population they didn’t like.

Indeed, yeah, I forgot to put quotes on "strongman!"
It's incredible just how people do not learn and still vote for the same type, over and over again, in spite of their candidates being consistently power-hungry pride-fuelled arrogant bastards that destroy rather than govern!
Although, stubbornness is the antithesis to learning, and seeing as their most prized attribute is stubbornness... :^P

Ai isn't going to do shit. It's good at some basic tasks but at the same time fails horribly and is unreliable. The ROI on AI for most companies is negative and it's only getting worse with time. The crux of the problem is that it's incapable of thinking.
TheMuellmann
This is ultimately not about killing jovs for writers or illustrators. It's about fundamentally destroying the way we process information, and thus how mich information we have access to.
Example: The concept of "news" is already vastly damaged, since we can't really trust any form of news to not be entirely made up anymore. This makes it waaay harder to gain an understanding of what's going on - and this hits intellevtually trained people way harder than "working class men" as he puts it.
firesurfer
The crux of the problem is ai cannot experience reality. I think that is the saving grace for people. It simply cannot achieve true ai. I think, it doesn't. I hope I'm right. In the short term I see regulations for ai similar to full driving for cars. I don't think class 5 driving will ever happen, people are too unpredictable for it to work. (flying is different so far) Ai actors will never get Oscars, the people that used ai may get awards for special effects though. Lots of stuff to consider
zuken
Not sure if you have more specific criteria behind "full driving for cars" but in my city we have taxies that are unmanned. You get in the back seat and are the only human in the car while it drives you to your destination.
firesurfer
These are experiments, and not general practice. The criteria for full self driving is unsupervised (including persons on the internet watching what vehicles are doing). The criteria for true level 5 are very strict and experimental. Tesla fsd is generally regarded as level 2. There is a lot of info on this on the net.
firesurfer
'Level 5 vehicles do not require human attention―the “dynamic driving task” is eliminated. Level 5 cars won’t even have steering wheels or acceleration/braking pedals. They will be free from geofencing, able to go anywhere and do anything that an experienced human driver can do. Fully autonomous cars are undergoing testing in several pockets of the world, but none are yet available to the general public.''
NotThePoint
No, the crux of the problem is we don't know what thinking actually is which is why we cannot replicate it. We have a fundamental gap in our knowledge and we don't even know the steps of how to solve it. It will be centuries before we crack this nut.
firesurfer
Maybe. I think it's the same thing in the end. Experiencing the real world is what creates self awareness. I think in less than 50 years we will have a better idea of what it is.
NotThePoint
No, self-awareness is absent in most animals.
firesurfer
Experiencing reality is only part of it. Developing empathy is considered essential. There is a lot of discussion about this.
BatmanAndCradleRobin
Claiming that is so fucking dangerous dude. AI is improving exponentially. Fucking Moore's law was linear, every 2 years computers doubled in power and look how off we were predicting such a slow increase. AI is doubling in most metrics in like 8-month periods, and the speed of growth is increasing and the periods are decreasing. Humans cannot handle exponential change our bains just don't work that way. That is insanely fast. Sticking your head in the sand will not help. We need to be scared
NotThePoint
As a computer scientist who has followed AI development, I can tell you that it is not improving exponentially. However, even if it was, it wouldn't matter because it's still incapable of thinking which means it will never be intelligent. We don't actually know the steps needed for thinking but just enough to understand that what is happening doesn't qualify as thinking. We have a fundamental knowledge gap about how brains work which is why can't make an artificial one. So calm down, friend.
DMSledge
Exactly. Improving an LLM is mostly about making it better at lying, not making it more accurate.
forsteri80
I have a good friend who loved to talk about Moore's law and exponential growth and how the singularity was going to happen in the next decade. That all started 20+ years ago, and since we had a shared communal blog, I have 20+ years of examples of his predictions of what would come to pass being hilariously off.
dreikommavierzehn
However that is better explained by the fundamentally wrong conception of how such singularity really looks like among all kinds of fanboys in this area.
The idea these people kept pushing borders more on magic than it does on reality. And the reason for it is because the narrative was always pushed by tech enthusiastic people. Who knew much about technology, but very little about neurobiology.
BatmanAndCradleRobin
He was closer than 99% of humanity then. By pretty much every metric we ever set for AI 20 years ago the current stuff has passed, we have kept moving the goal post when we realized how easily it passed all our so-called red lines. The singularity is when the computer gets smart enough to improve itself. We are literally at that now.
forsteri80
This is so verbatim I have to ask... Andy?
BatmanAndCradleRobin
no but it would be funny. I think you owe him an apology to mock him even now when he was clearly pretty accurate. Most people thought computers would never replace letters, most people then thought it wouldn't replace the phone, then most people didnt think it would replace most human interaction, now its literally replacing people.
TheHolyFatman
The company I work for is making it mandatory to use AI. We have to "demonstrate" we have automated or innovated our tasks using AI. Our performance reviews depend on it. It's so fucked up....I can guess that they entered into an agreement with one of these fucks and they told them we'd adopt it. When we all were like "nawww..." They forced us.
basti0731
time for some malicious compliance. Every task now takes twice as long.
DMSledge
Can you get AI to automate your reviews by management?
TheHolyFatman
I wouldn't be surprised......
DMSledge
Finally something useful. With a failure rate of only 20% AI will vastly exceed managerial performance!
"Hello Supervisor Bob. What's that? You want to see my utilization and efficiency reports? My AI manager has already taken care of those. As an extra favour, he's taking care of yours too."
Filolial
Never understood why an company would make AI use mandatory, the company where I work has pretty much banned AI due to the security risks of leaking company data.
TheHolyFatman
Companies are making it mandatory because adoption of it has been weak AF. None of us want to use the slop generator, so forcing us and making our performance reviews depend upon it is the only way they'll make their $
denimdenis
I’m in exactly the same boat.
I can’t figure out anyway in which it will help. 90% of my work is spreadsheets, the most time consuming work is formatting and updating sheet and data etc. All copilot does is think for ages and spit out a list of steps, which are all things I’m pretty much doing
I’m hoping it will help more on data analysis but looking grim
It’s so genius, but the onus is on me to speak to it exactly the way it needs to do anything useful. And If I succeed then (1/2)
denimdenis
(2/2) then I’m giving more justification for the higher ups to lay me off, if I fail then I failed at the performance goal which also increases the risk of lay off…what a time to be alive
TheHolyFatman
Yup I need to do the same: comply or get axed. The whole "be glad you have a job!" Is fucked.....
Jace99
My brother has been coding since the 80s. He said something that really stuck with me. AI can only reproduce what humans have already done. It can’t create or imagine anything new. It’s boring. It will bore us all very quickly.
Filolial
Pretty much, AI in general can never surpass the knowledge of the data it was trained on, and as all data was human made it will never surpass humans. It can combine existing ideas into something new, or see patterns we might have overlooked, but never create something completely new. Though not sure if it will bore people... looking at social media which is the same but slightly different slop everyday and people are addicted to that.
BatmanAndCradleRobin
He's wrong though. AI can solve reasoning problems that it has not seen before. Those words might sound comforting, but It's just not true, AI can do novel work. We need to deal with the consequences we cant just say it wont replace us or we will get bored of it.
Etherealvalentine
It's a glorified aggregate data compiler.
shorey66
That's fundamentally complete bollocks. It quite simply can't come up with anything new. All it can do is take already available information and regurgitate it.... Often incorrectly.
Skywatcher16
no, it cant. it can apply the same work at a novel scale, because it can run caclulations faster and dosnt need breaks. and as we all know,
BatmanAndCradleRobin
Im not certain you understood, I was not talking about novel as in books, but novel as in new and never done before work. AI can solve problems it's not seen before, math and logic ones. Sure it can produce a book, but solving a logic problem thats not in its data set, or math problems no human has solved and thus not in the data set means it can solve problems.
Skywatcher16
i understand you meant as in new. my reply was in response to you under that presumption. only the kind of idiocy that thinks AI is novel could see that in the context given and think someone was speaking of books rather than claims to innovation.
shorey66
So a calculator is also an AI system solving problems. Wow, we've had this technology for decades
Skywatcher16
quantity is a quality of its own. but at the end of the day, theres nothing NEW about the calculations being done. its the same work, faster
spartanatreyu
No. Quantity is not a quality of its own. Writing code was never the bottleneck. Understanding code that you didn't write has always been the bottleneck. You need to make sure the code actually does what the author claims it does, you need to make sure that it's going to be compatible with the other code that you already understand, and you have to make sure it's going in the right direction. LLMs cannot understand something for you, 1/
