Twilight Zone, night Gallery, Planet of the Apes, etc., etc...

movies_and_tv

The original Twilight Zone is my favorite show of all time. So many of the episodes touch on ideas and concepts that are still relevant today, 65 years later. To say it was ahead of its time would be an understatement.

He was set to host "In Search Of" when he died, leading them to cast Leonard Nimoy instead. Childhood core memory

Rod Serling... taken from us way before his time. I can only imagine what fantastic script writing and producing he could've done for another 20 years before retiring.

He is sorely missed. Such a brilliant, insightful, imaginative man.

SCOTT STERLING DOES IT AGAIN

Another voice from our past that tried to warn us

RECOMMENDED: If you're a fan of Serling, you could do a lot worse than watch 'The Vast of Night'. It's a very Serling-like tale of a small town in New Mexico in the late fifties and strange disruptions to radio signals and to the local telephone exchange. The town is called Cayuga, the same as Serling's production company. What sets the film apart is the hugely original way in which the story is told. Oh, and the radio station is called K-WOTW. War Of The World's anyone?

Thank you for that! I'm going to see if I can find it anywhere.

He moved into a land of both shadow and substance

The Pluto tv app has a station dedicated to The Twilight Zone.

I signed up for Pluto TV just for the twilight zone channel, and I watch it every night, man those stories still hold up.

For the longest time, I thought his last name was Sterling.

He was an amazing person. Take a look at his Wiki entry.

this is the episode that hooked me on the twilight zone forever: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invaders_(The_Twilight_Zone)

He's from my hometown! The last house he lived in was just the other side of the park from our house😊

Binghamton! My grandad went to highschool with him so I'm told!

Rod graduated from North High (Later Binghamton High School) I'm 1943. The day after graduation he enlisted in the Army

This death brought to you by chain-smoking Chesterfields.

Chesterfields always remind me of Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken. That movie has some of the most iconic scenes.

(In voice of Rod Serling): “A man who was known both for science fiction and dramatic pauses, takes the most epic sci-fi journey with the most dramatic pause.”

"Imagine if you will..."

Found an clip narrated by an A.I. generated voice and remade it with a collage of intros from the TV show (sound on):

The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is still as relevant and powerful today as it was during the cold war.

Or their antifascist episodes like Eye of the Beholder, He's Alive, Obsolete Man. Although I take issue with how happy Eye of the Beholder ends.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was genuinely shocked at Eye of the Beholder when I first saw it as a kid. The Obselete Man is another prescient episode when looking at the speed of automation, AI and the dismissal of art and culture from certain quarters.

I'm okay with the "happy" ending because the story wasn't intended to speak out against discrimination; it was intended to illustrate the idiom.

That is one cool statue. Where is it?

In Recreation Park, Binghamton NY. I need to get there and see it, it's not far from where I live!

If only that pedestal gave us some sort of clue

Stupid tiny phone screen.

Strange timing; I'm heading to a store in the next week or so to buy Night Gallery complete series because there's nowhere that's streaming it at a reasonable price. My brother thought I was crazy for hanging on to my dvd player and collection of discs. Who's crazy now? Lol

9 months ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

And well, the series was made in low resolution, so it still looks OK on DVD. But remastering... wow. It IS magnificent, but then there's a little magic lost in doing that.

Whenever I watch a DVD, I feel like one of those smug audiophiles who never ditched their turntables.

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What store still sells DVDs though? I'm trying to boycott Amazon, but it's so hard to find things.

Try secondhand bookstores, if you're fortunate enough to have them in your area.

Back home in Canada, the place that has the most DVDs is Walmart & Toys R Us, which is funny & sad

Half Price Books

Walmart, unfortunately, but I found a little mom and pop game store that said they have it, and they'll hold it for me until Wednesday. Either way, Im watching Rod Serling in color soon, lol.

If you have Paramount+ you can watch all episodes. We have it bundled with my AT&T cellular service (I think).

9 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We must have different subscriptions, or you're in another region that has it. I just searched, and it says "no results". Im in the US btw. Prime video wants $1.99 an episode or $17.49 for one season. I can go get the complete series for less than $20 and no ones going to come back at me with some "purchase doesn't mean ownership" crap.

9 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I’m also in the US but maybe my “included” membership is different. Yes, the issue with buying a movie via Prime or whatever means you need to stick with that service or your purchase goes bye bye. Love hate relationship but mostly hate.

I also just looked at my account details and it’s included with Spectrum (cable provider) in southern CA.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, there's the squeaky wheel. No Spectrum subscription. We're in SE OK and they don't service this far east. We'll at least I know Im not crazy or as my wife puts it "selectively blind" lol. I'll go grab my DVD this week and be happy. Thanks for trying to help, though. It's definitely appreciated! +1

I wouldn't give up my DVDs or DVD player. I love them as it means I can watch any movie I choose at anytime I please - I don't have to go around hunting for them. Neither do you get the extras with streaming - I'm a sucker for the 'Making Of...' parts. I have around 600 DVDs, and they ain't goin' nowhere! I'm also delighted that nobody wants them as I can pick up great movies for as little as 25p (about 34 cents US) in second hand shops.

9 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Right!? We found a local mom and pop game shop that sells them and has a pretty decent selection. The guy says no one ever buys them, so no competition, lol. We live in an area that sees frequent storms, including tornadoes, and the internet goes out regularly. Everyone else is complaining and Im like "ok, Im gonna go binge watch tales from the crypt or family guy; i haven't decided yet. Come by later were gonna watch Office Space!" Lol

That's exactly what I'm talking about!
