And there is no treatment yet.

The initial damage is obvious, but it does not go away like it seems to; it is just neural rewiring to cut out the damaged parts.

Not to mention the possibility of triggering PTSD.

When I was in the military some people thought it was funny to do this to others.
I was born very hard of hearing and have worked hard my whole life to speak well and my hearing can be sensitive with certain frequencies.

When they air-horned me, I went off on those turds and never had to deal with again.

Yep, I have mild tinnitus and ptsd. I'm almost constantly on edge, worried someone is gonna set something off close by.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also add to this people who rev their engines next to pedestrians, especially in enclosed spaces. Nobody thinks you're cool for taking the muffler off and causing hearing damage, which is in fact, assault.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The point at which permanent hearing damage occurs is around 85dB. At this point permanent damage begins to occur after listening for 8 hours. The rule of thumb is halve the time for every 3dB.

Air horns start at over 100dB and go way higher, but even at 100, the time is down to 15 minutes.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you know that if you stuck a particularly sensitive microphone into the ear of someone suffering from Tinnitus, you can capture the sound?
It's not just some made up condition of the mind, you can actually physically damage your ears, and they will scream at you for the rest of your life.
And if someone else does that to you, they're not being quirky or goofy. They're an asshole, and should be treated as such.

I'd rather someone just chuck the airhorn at my head.

Some parents had a cordless-drill-powered air horn at a kids hockey game, right behind the scorebox where we were working. Reverberated off the four sides of glass every time her team scored. Luckily our goalie didn’t let that happen much. Asked her to stop; she just moved farther down the bleachers…

I have a portable air horn in my Jeep for riding with the doors off. It’s for protection not pranks.

An acceptable use.

My wife can whistle about as loud as an air horn blast. Once while I was driving and she was in the passenger seat, she spotted a friend on the sidewalk on the driver's side of the car. So she leaned that direction, got her face about an inch from my ear, and whistled as loudly as she could. It took all the self control I could muster not to punch her face through the back of her skull. That was about fifty years ago and I still have a ringing in my right ear that wasn't there before.

Another example of assault under the guise of a "prank".

Hearing loss is cumulative and permanent. It cannot be stressed enough.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

One of the reasons I am of the opinion that hearing protection needs to be recurring educational topic in the educational system, going into more detail with increasing age (aka age appropriate).

I had entertained the thought of putting one on my car, as an extreme motivational device. It would only be used as protection, of course. I would maintain my usual horn for day to day, but the one time someone pushes their luck, they'll have to change underwear.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sorry, @op, but there is no amount of "neural rewiring" that can "cut out the damaged parts" of a blown out ear drum, or the scar tissue that forms as a result, and the loss of hair cells in the cochlea, among other damage.. Sensorineural hearing loss is not correctable at all.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

I described my best current and simple to explain understanding of the fact that hearing seems to come back for the most part after the damage is done. And my title also said that it was not correctable as you describe it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Clarification, minor to middle damage, not the extreme damage you describe.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There's definately a number of stupid people that believe if it's funny them, it's just a prank.

I knew someone that would like to scare people when they were getting things out of the oven. They were told repeatedly it wasn't okay and what could happen.

Then someone pranked them the same way. They ended up getting a good sized burn and finally...finally....understood why people would get so mad. Like others were just NPCs of their life story.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is no joke. I would phsyically beat someone if they did that shit to me and then I would tell the police I was acting in self defense.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It is considered assault (or battery) in a lot of juridictions. Press charges

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, I am in no way giving legal advice sorry. But I would strongly suggest to ask for legal advice from a professional

I used to do valet, had a guy get his truck back and showed off his horn that was rigged to be an insanely loud air horn. I have PTSD and immediately hit the ground crying while he laughed and drove off. Full agreement of this post.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I know it is hard to think in the moment, but if there was a Valet paper trail or other evidence, trying to get him charged with assault would have been the way to go in my opinion.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where and why are you around these types of people can I ask ?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I already have tinnitus, and let me tell you, I have been merged into by a large vehicle so often that I have considered keeping an airhorn in my cup holder for such things because the horn does seemingly nothing. I don't because other drivers might find it to be a distraction and I don't want to kill anyone. But I'd also like not to be driven into the ditch while I'm minding my own business.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That is a valid use, unlike blasting a person at close range.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Here's what you need: https://www.thedrive.com/reviews/31282/best-train-horn-kit

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same problem as the air horn. Startling other drivers who didn't do anything wrong. I don't want that otherwise I'd have bought an airhorn a long time ago. Plus this might be illegal in my state (I'd have to look). But thank you.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a good point. You can put it on a different switch than your regular horn, for when the occasion arises. I figure if it's at the same level as a semi truck horn, it's probably not illegal.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're both in on it.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Even if true, it encourages continued asshattery of the sort.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only issue is most governments will protect the one assaulting with the horn and prosecute the one defending himself and others with the bridge. It's a kind of outsourced tyranny.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Most governments would charge them both. Assuming the whole thing wasn't a set-up where they were in it together, horn guy would definitely land an assault charge where I am. The other guy might start with worse, given that he actually threw him off a bridge, but they'd quickly wind it down as having been provoked and either dismiss it all together or just do a light slap on the wrist (30 days probation or something).

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not sure how to describe this, but not enough justice was done, off the top of my head.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You never realize how many truck drivers are completely awful people until you start cycling every day and I had like three of them yesterday gun it as they went past me to smoke me out on purpose. I had one guy do it just 200m from his home, and I went outside his house and yelled at the guy for like a good 10 minutes.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Do you mean pickup truck drivers? Because they definitely tend to be especially awful people compared to car drivers. Semi truck drivers, on the other hand, tend to be more respectful towards cyclists than most drivers, in my experience.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Did you file a report?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I called the non-emergency line, told them what happened, a uniform called me a few hours later and told me he was heading out to the house to talk with the person. I don't know if that's considered a report, but honestly, even though he was belligerent, after he told me that I wanted to **** Justin Trudeau's ****, because apparently I looked like a liberal (which I am), I got really loud calling him a Nazi and must've yelled "You pick on the weak." 30+ times. I think he might be cured.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't want to sound like victim blaming, but from my beginners understanding you have to insist on filing a report. That is the first step in getting charges pressed.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Unfortunately, the people who need to hear this (no pun intended) do not care. If they did, they wouldn't be doing these kinds of pranks to begin with.

2 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 1

Everyone has a first time that they realize that loud noises can cause permanent damage.

The guy who got shot for this dipshittery still does it. Even nearly dying isn't enough for them.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A tempting but shallow position to take IMHO. Punishment, yes, permanent in kind physical damage, no.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Everyone has a moment...in the heat of it it's easier to stand in shallow water...more all talk no action myself. ITG? (me, not you) Shit, I don't even run from the local thieves..."hey, how you doin'?" where my wife is like DON'T TALK TO THEM! THEY'RE BAD! They'll take your stuff! Well if they do at least I know where it is.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I failed to clarify; In the heat of the moment is not what I meant. I meant justice.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh I know...you were calling out my response as shallow...I was talking about me being in the heat of the moment. I swim in shallow until the red mist clears...I'm making up euphemisms that don't exist yet. Or maybe it's one of those other things where you use phrases which mean nothing but have that wink wink nudge ;-/ "get it?" vibe happening. Like falling off the turnip truck...or listening for trees falling in the forest. Mixing metaphors maybe? Not a major of anything here so...derp derp?

A kid did this to a vet in my area. It did not end well for either of them.

2 years ago | Likes 216 Dislikes 1

My dad was a Vietnam vet. Sudden, unexpected sounds...let's just say that they did not go over well and ended in near hospital visits on several occasions.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My friend doesn't know about this. Sauce?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Let me guess. The vet lost his hearing and the kid lost a few teeth?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Don’t think it would end well for anyone who did this to someone else regardless of vet status. I’d drop kick someone if they did that to me or someone nearby.

Exactly one of the reasons I included the PTSD phrase. Vet was victim, but sounds like he (understandably) reacted disproportionately.

2 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 2

I thought he was taking about a veterinarian until I read your comment lol

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Well, that's exactly why PTSD is debilitating -- your automatic brain overreacts in the present.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He knee jerk reacted and broke the kids' nose. Kids' parents filed charges. I really dont like the kind of people this country keeps spitting out.

2 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 0

Kids parents sued? I would have punished my kid a lot after that. Downgrade to a phone that can't surf only text and call. At least grounded for a month. Any talk back or saying it is unfair would increase the punishments. But most of all I would be disappointed. So utterly disappointed.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A miscarriage of justice then. I withdraw my statement of his reacting disproportionately.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Those kinds of people have been around for ages, it's nothing new. They also exist everywhere else in the world, so you can't worry too much. Spoiled kids, enabler parents

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They can file charges all they want, but did they win the case? Hopefully the judge sided with the vet.

2 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

Nothing will come of it, the old soldier and the shitty family are both well known in the area. But the kid is the son of a famous drummer, who is also a piece of shit. So he won't face consequences to any degree.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have 2 different frequencies in each ear. Being a scientist with access to an anechoic chamber and a bunch of other s&p equipment, I know the exact freqs and perceived intensity that I experience. This allows me to easily replicate the experience for those who don't understand that it's literally chronic pain.

It rarely takes more than 30 seconds before they're begging me to turn it off, followed by HOW THE HELL DO YOU FUNCTION LIKE THAT?!?

I had a pair of JBL D315 when I was 12. They moved lots of air even though I underpowered them.

I started noticing signs of tinnitus by age 13. I didn't really notice until my friends played a punk show. Ringing never stopped after that. I've since done plenty of worse things. I don't really notice it because it's been my normal for 27 years now. I don't think I'd miss it if it stopped though

My left ear is slowly dying. It started with tinnitus, then TINNITUS, I just wanted it to stop, would do anything to make it stop. Then the cochlear died and the ringing stopped, total deafness in one ear was a blessing. Now the balance organ is dying and i randomly fall over. Cant turn my head fast or i fall over, and i would still take that over the tinnitus

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sad that the medical system cannot give you affordable treatment.

The treatment is surgical removal of the balance organ, then training of the brain to use only one ear. Either way i fall down randomly for a while.

One of the many reasons I do not want to contract it yet, and have not done so via the precautions I take.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had it before vaccines came out and that did the most damage. The newer variants aren’t as bad from that perspective.

Yep, even with "hearing protection" (the quotes are because the foam plugs we got were useless), ordinance explosions and demolition when I was with a Combat Engineers Battalion, I've forgotten what life is like without the constant "eeeEEEeeeEeeEee."

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have a theory that I have not gotten around to testing or look in the literature yet for, that for maximum protection against such concussive forces such as this, and poorly attenuated indoor shooting ranges as another example, a fully enclosed helmet is needed.

It is a fact that the concussive forces are making their way inside the skull via the nose. And it is also a fact that the entire skull is subject to extreme sound pressure thus subjecting the inner ear via bone conduction.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have mild tinnitus that comes and goes randomly - it sucks ass. I couldn't imagine a severe case.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Might be that you just need a low level of sound to override it. I'm fine 90% of the time, but as soon as the ambient sounds drops past a point, all I hear is eeeereeeeeeeeee

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Tip I found online helps with my tinnitus when it gets to be too much- cover your ears with your hands, and gently drum on the back of your skull with your fingers for about 15 seconds. You should feel rumbling in your ear when done properly. Remove your hands. Blessed silence for a couple of minutes.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tried it. Stopped because was inducing headache.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, that's what I have. S'why I need a fan on or some low level ambience like brown noise at all times.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have a mild case. And the only reason I realised I had it, was when I read an explanation of it. That dawning moment of "you mean everyone doesn't have a permanent ringing in their ears?"

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Have you tried calling the tinnitus hotline? Just forget it. It just keeps on ringing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I've had mild tinnitus since I was 12 due to a fireworks accident (not as bad as it sounds, a tiny firecracker blew near my head). I am fortunate enough that as long as there is background noise, and I'm not thinking about it, my tinnitus can go largely unnoticed. But if there's any degree of silence, or I start thinking about it, it'll come back, and I can hear it all the time until my brain stops focusing on it and I go back to that neutral mental place. It can be really annoying.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Holy fuck, I could have written this. The same incident, same age, same tinnitus. It sucks to never be able to sit in absolute silence. My wife heard a ringing noise one day and I told her that is what I hear all day, every day. She has a new sympathy for me now.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When I was about 12 I got hit in the side of the head with a snowball, right on my ear. The snowball turned out to be packed with firecrackers, I'm not saying that's where my tinnitus came from because I was in construction for 12 years but it sure didn't help.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The treatment only alleviates the phantom noises, it does not undo the hearing loss due to damage.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What treatment? I got bad tinnitus after covid a year ago..

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It'd be best to talk to an otorhinolaryngologists because the treatment options vary depending on what exactly is causing it in the first place. If it's a muscle vibrating due to stress there are exercises that can help loosen it back up to stop that, if it's damage to the inner ear hairs white noise treatments might help. If it's the nerves misfiring I believe there's a new experimental therapy option using very tiny electro shocks or something?
Best to consult a professional first tbh.

I can't even imagine how y'all stay sane

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Thats the neat part, you dont!

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I went absolutely nuts the first couple months, but at some point you learn to live with it. It ain't fun though.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

That's the neat part... You don't.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The trick is not to start sane.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You get a pass to say "WHAT" anytime you need

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Tell that to my wife!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lotta weed

Although the “WHAT?” jokes are never not funny lmao

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for implying we were sane to begin with.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm entirely reliant on background noise. Always need to have a fan running, quiet music, or a white noise machine. The silence is unbearable because it doesn't exist anymore. Just sounds like an electrical short inside of your head 24/7.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We don't.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We don't.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really gets annoying (almost claustrophobic) when you listen to it. So I just try not to tune in to the tinnitus frequency. If you have it, you know what I mean.

It's tenacious.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't worry about it, after 40 years or so you'll mostly get used to it,... mostly 😏

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Had it since I was a kid, didn't realize I had it until I flew on a plane for the first time and could still hear "crickets" 30,000ft up. I grew up in the swamps shooting guns and always thought it was just loud ass crickets 24/7.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

One of the reasons I am of the opinion that hearing protection needs to be recurring educational topic in the educational system, going into more detail with increasing age (aka age appropriate).

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ugh, ass crickets are the worst.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't mean this in any demeaning way but that's the most redneck thing I've read in weeks

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It only became demeaning because of the euphemism treadmill.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How is this an unpopular opinion?

2 years ago | Likes 322 Dislikes 5

US.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Frequency of doing this. Everything from pranks to protests are very comfortable using this ear adjacent. It isn't seen as remotely in the ballpark of using pepperspray even though the damage can be life long.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Because the most common culprit are carbrains announcing to all the pedestrians around them that someone in front of them isn't driving to their own personal satisfaction.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's unpopular to abusive idiots.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most puffins love airhorn pranks.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The only way to get an unpopular opinion puffin to the front page is to post a popular opinion.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's not it's even assault if someone chooses to press charges. And the existence of a prank video would be very convenient evidence should the need arise.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Then why are there so many "prank" videos of it happening.?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Because not everyone moralizes their media consumption

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Hey guys unpopular opinion here but does anyone else think hurting people is bad?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The popularity of "prank" videos where this is happening.

2 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 9

I call those the FAFO Pranksters. They are betting people will have a flight or freeze reaction, but eventually get a fight response

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Like that kid that got shot and KILLED in Nashville. He was doing a knife robbery prank. FAFO indeed.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Especially without significant consequences.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Sometimes there are significant consecuences to pranks, but you must be ready for actual violence. I slapped a guy to the ground for a kind of prank.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some might argue a slippery slope about calling things that do not have contact "assault". I'm not one of those people. I 100% agree with @OP but I am not sure what legal wonks might say about it.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 7

Blast one in a cops ear and see what happens

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Assault does not require physical contact by (dictionary and legal) definition, it is "harm /or/ unwanted contact". Some places do have strange legal codes where battery is not separate and thus the joint crime of "assault and battery" requires physical contact, but /most/ locations separate the two and thus assault does not require physical contact.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

No clue about the assault part, but I can’t imagine it would be overly hart to sue a person that caused deafness.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Noise is a torture category, isn’t it? If it works for torture I feel like it should qualify for assault

Binyam Mohamed suffered Eminem's "Slim Shady" for 20 days.
"I heard this nonstop over & over," he told...Reprieve, [an] organization determined to end music torture practices. "CIA worked on people, including me, day & night for the months before I left. Plenty lost their minds."
Check on the torture angle, anyway.

"Some might argue a slippery slope..."
Yes, people who are wrong are prone to arguing all sorts of things.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As others have said, all is required for assault is to cause fear or apprehension of injury. Battery is what requires unwanted physical contact.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Apparently throwing water at someone is considered assault in some parts of America, or so I'm told... (Not American). So I'm sure this could be too! Nothing makes sense over there, everything is possible! /S

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Currently have a friend staying with me because she has a no contact order and is facing assault charges for throwing water.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In many states assault doesn't require touching someone. Battery requires touching someone. That's the key difference.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Are you positive about battery?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It causes physical damage even though there is no contact. Same goes for high powered lasers for example.

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Depends on your definition of “contact” I suppose. The science of physics would certainly support the argument that both loud noises and lasers are indeed making “contact” with a victim on a molecular level.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

According to you silly position, shooting someone is not assault.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

It's attempted murder

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's.. not what they are saying though, they're saying there's an argument to be made that sounds, etc, are also making contact

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

My apologies if the wording of my comment was too ambiguous.

To be more clear, the point I was trying to make was that physics dictates that lasers and loud sounds DO make contact with a victim, and as such they SHOULD be considered weapons capable of assault and battery.

“Battery is an unlawful application of force directly or indirectly upon another person or their personal belongings, causing bodily injury or offensive contact.”

Loud sounds and lasers are both applications of force.

My POV, its the only self defense tool my minor daughter can carry and use. That said, deliberately using one without cause should be considered assault, no different than unlawfully pepper spraying someone or punching them.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

An acceptable use, not to say that the situation calling for it is acceptable.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Self defense is a far cry from a shitty prank.
