That's a quick way to get life in prison. Arm yourself, call the cops, and IF he breaks the door down, then yeah I'd say it's deadly force time (Not a lawyer, not legal advice*). It really depends on your state laws but, in most states if you're behind a locked door and they aren't IN your house they aren't considered a deadly threat. Unless they are armed or shooting into your house or something.

Depending on the state, him saying "Open the door or I will f***ing end you" may change things quite a bit, as that threat becomes more imminent because of what he said and the conditions he gave. That makes it much more reasonable to assume a deadly threat is imminent, given the totality of the circumstances, including the yelling and the trench coat potentially concealing something.
State laws vary though and as you said it’s best to lean towards the side of caution and be 100% sure
