I think Kirk was a skilled debater. I'm NOT saying his arguments were based on reality or any kind of reasonable morality, but he was good at the art of debating like controlling the conversation to favor him, sounding smart to an ignorant audience, etc. Also I don't think public appearances like events are a requirement to be concerned. I mean I saw plenty of people on the left who are professional-internet-talkers like this guy and like Charlie Kirk that were upset because they saw that someone was killed for going out and saying things that half the country disagrees with, and they could see themselves being killed just as easily because they also say a lot that is controversial to a big chunk of the country.
