It's been a while, but IIRC, and obviously spoilers: he's been performing experiments on an infected woman to try and find a cure. At the end of the movie the infected break into his home and he's trapped in the lab behind heavy glass. One of the infected smears a design on the glass using his blood, and Will realizes that it looks like the tattoo on the woman he was trying to cure. At that point he realizes it's the dude's wife and they had been acting in self defense.
I'm detecting microaggressions.
That's the director's cut. We're living in the theatrical version where we just blow ourselves up thinking we're the hero.
I feel like I'm gonna catch epilepsy from this thing.
