As a guy who's now going through therapy because I've never had such an experience with my family, please do not shy away from the difficult topics. Talk about pain, loss, love and all the other emotions we can experience. It is so important. As a kid, I've never had a "difficult" chat with either of my parents and it left me truly unprepared for emotional hardship. Talk to your kid about the difficult stuff, please. For their sake.
