You know the movie “Being There” based on the book by Jerzy Kosinski? We are living it in real life except Chance the Gardener had a brilliant mind compared to this imbecile…

It’s even more nuanced than that. For example the word “carajo” can be a fairly mild insult in Bolivia, but a fairly serious swear word in Venezuela. As someone whose first language is Spanish, I avoid using certain words or expressions, depending where I am, to keep from conveying the wrong meaning…por si acaso”

Yes! I would say “mierdas” will work just as well in any of those situations, but I would also say it’ll land differently depending on context and audience, not unlike ‘shit” in English speaking countries. “Coño" can be less offensive in countries where it’s not commonly used. Most everyone understands, but it doesn’t “sound” as bad if it’s only used seldom.

Not a bad start, as long as you realize there are exceptions, which vary by country, and then within regions inside each country, then by city, then by neighborhood, and of course by individual families. En mi familia: “Por qué mierdas dices eso?”

I grew up watching “Los Locos Addams” and the characters had different names except for Morticia (which was just pronounced differently). Thing was “Dedos” and Cousin Itt was “La Cosa” which, to me, seemed to fit better
