Some of the most important things in football are field position, time of possession, and ball security. This tactic plays to none of those.
If rugby could block and pass forward it would evolve into more like American football. It is a lot safer to run the ball & pass set routes.
NHL lost a bunch of network support when they went on strike. I remember watching it a lot as a kid and now you have to search for it.

He memorized the plays but to report them to the huddle they are written down so the coach can say "play 4" and he said said pro right 1/2
It has plays on it so a coordinator can tell him a number and he can read it off the sheet.
