My cat does pretty much the same thing, she just rubs her face in my shoes whenever I take them off.
The problem here is that the bullets wouldn't stop dead on the ledge. They would ricochet and he would still lose his fingers.
Smaller nuts are able to slip through the gaps more easily, so they end up at the bottom when the can is shaken.
