Seriously? All woodworking kills the tree, as do very many other things. As Jefferson Airplane so aptly put it "Doesn't mean shit to a tree". That's why I do my best not to commit murder in the woodshop. The tree gave it's life. I owe it to put the wood to the most beautiful form/use I can. Karma.

Don't think a joint like that needs glue. It stands (holds) on it's own.
If you look at "the Art of Japanese Joinery" and other such you will find joints that hold huge timbers together in buildings that withstand earthquakes and are seriously elegant. Also, they are done with hand tools only and no metal screws, bolts, etc. Mallet, saw, chisel, and not much else other than unbelievable skill and precision. Western woodworkers (including Krenov) are crude compared to this increadible skill and precision with hand tools. Krenov is something of a phenom, but ...
Also, evergreen trees go semi-dormant in winter. Deciduous trees drop their leaves and go completely dormant in winter. Thus no Co2 absorbtion, nor O2 production.
