It is actually common in geese and ducks, particularly in Canadian geese. For starters they can't seem to tell the difference so as long as they are of a similar size they often will adopt. Also because of so many predators they have an instinct to adopt or protect goslings. Heck I've heard they will sometimes take goslings of different species the drive to protect is so strong. Even ducklings.
Hail damage is often covered by insurance if you can list the storm date and proof of damage
