It's not that we are all stupid, it's that the powers that be want stupidity to reign and have been successful in that campaign. They use weird, misplaced nationalism and nearly meaningless issue to stoke the fires of ignorance. They groom single-issue voters to support larger policies that go against their own interests. Assholes in rural areas feel they've won because gay people can't married or women can't abortions, even if those issues don't affect them at all. In this way, America dies.
