The method you would then be shown for this particular problem would be to write "10" above the 8, subtract the 9, and then add the 8 back.
Usually a problem like "22-9" would be easier via this method. It reminds you that you're also subtracting in the 10s place.

If a DM can't keep himself from telling me how clever he is, I'm not walking my character into whatever trap he set!
