Yes they do and they work just like that. But like you said at that speed it would take more distance to stop then they had. With them being an Intermodal train they were probably going 70 mph up until they saw the obstructions and hit the emergency brake.

These two were probably out of tolerance and the other two weren't by much. It doesn't matter how close it is, if it's good it's good.
They're either 40 ton or 60 ton jacks. A single one could lift one end of an empty car.
It rolls very easily as long as the track is even and the wheel doesn't hit dirt. The brakes aren't tight when the truck is unhooked.
On an even track where the flange doesn't hit anything a truck can roll with ease.
I'm good at what I do. Pissed off a sorry supervisor and now I'm waiting to see if I still have a job.
And turn off your water heater. The heating elements will go bad without water on them.

I've found TIG gloves to be useful for smithing. Not bulky so you have dexterity with protection.
