Powdered quartz most likely. And he washed out the lye from the ash.It would separate at some point, but if the powder is fine enough it will remain in suspension for long enough to be applied.

Oh, wait - he puts together the quartz flour, then the lye from the ash, then some yellow stuff (could be iron oxide) and then a black stuff (probably carbon, which would do the reducing).
I think the stuff they gather in the beginning is just quartz as the base of the glaze. I don't know when he added the pigment.
