50% nerd, 50% geek, 50% loser, 50% bad at math

Sorry, but where you’re from doesn’t really matter if you’re going to participate in the conversation anyway, and the defeatist attitude is not helpful to anyone but those who benefit from our apathy. You can be smug about it not being your problem all you like, but I’d ask you: why *not* care instead?

In the GR class I’m taking the syllabus refers to them as Carter-Penrose diagrams if that’s any consolation lol, though it seems a lot of science-y things end up being named after only one of their creators/discoverers…

Not quite, a Penrose diagram is just a mathematical tool to describe the black hole, kind of like a map. The accretion disk is made of the matter that the black hole is sucking in and is the part of the black hole we can actually see

The pattern of lines on the front of the dress are a Penrose diagram, basically a nerdy way to compactly describe what spacetime looks like around a black hole.

Bastille and Twenty One Pilots both did Unplugged shows in 2023! I don’t think they’re as big a deal as they used to be (I don’t think either were televised) but it seems like they’re still happening at least

As a physics major now doing their master’s in physics, I definitely learned more about vector calculus in the first week of my electromagnetism course than I did in a full semester vector calculus course

Pretty sure this one is from a while ago too, I follow them on Instagram and they haven’t made any jokes like this in years. Most of their stuff now is just loaded with sexual innuendo

Idk, I felt like we got a lot of material showing Evelyn’s dedication to Astra in both her promo videos and the story itself, and sure we don’t have a lot of the other direction (at least not explicitly), but I definitely see the potential. I agree though that Jane x Seth has a lot going for it too

I mean that’s still a gamble as to whether the rest of the album is as good as the songs getting radio play

Depends on the map, the one I had found for reference doesn’t have a top/bottom warp

(This is being pedantic, I know, but) technically it’s closer to a 2D representation of a cylinder. Honestly having cylindrical earthers out there would be refreshing

(3/3) It’s hard to say for sure whether the Dakota Johnson incident was truly the catalyst for this but the Internet’s consensus seems to be that it was

(2/3) - The 50 Shades movie and Dakota Johnson both get hugely popular as well, leading to Johnson’s appearance on the Ellen show
- On the show, Ellen tries to embarrass Dakota Johnson by claiming she wasn’t invited to Johnson’s birthday or something like that, and Johnson calls her out as Ellen was, in fact, invited
- Around the same time, people start coming forward and sharing stories about the toxic work environment on the show and other instances of Ellen just generally not being great

My memory’s a bit spotty but I think it goes something like this:
- Gerard Way witnesses 9/11 and it becomes a big influence in him forming My Chemical Romance
- Stephanie Meyer is inspired by MCR’s music while writing the Twilight series
- E. L. James writes a Twilight bdsm fanfic that is later published as 50 Shades of Grey
- 50 Shades of Grey gets hugely popular, and gets a film adaptation starring Dakota Johnson (1/2)

I do have to give props to this edit though, I’ve seen a bunch of other versions with other songs on top of the video but none of them ever seems to get the timing or tempo right

Technically it should be |sec c|, since it’s the square root of a squared quantity.
At any rate, the square root operation only returns the positive answer. The +/- only arises when the result is the solution to an equation (eg. x^2 = 4 has solution x = +/- 2, but sqrt(4) is always just 2)

For as much as the internet seems to love MILFs they really don’t seem to like the very necessary part that comes before huh

This! My parents got a lot right with raising me and I’m so grateful for that, but they are also responsible for a lot of emotional damage that I’m still working on healing from. I spent a long time thinking that my issues were solely my fault until I got the outside perspective via my girlfriend’s interactions with my parents

It’s one of those TikTok-isms that lets people know that the video will cut to a reaction to said video. I suspect that it’s there to stop people from instinctively scrolling away or blocking the account as soon as they see content they don’t want to engage with

I’ve recently started playing Dark Souls for the first time and my brother’s advice was “Dark Souls bosses rarely play fair, so you shouldn’t either”. Completely changed my outlook on the games. Instead of just getting good at combat, now I’m striving to out-cheese the bosses and it is massively increasing my enjoyment of the game

The shutter sound on phone cameras is an example of a skeuomorph! It’s a concept in design where objects retain aspects of their design even after that specific aspect no longer provides any real functional value. In this case, our phone cameras simulate the sound of a shutter, even though they don’t actually have one, to serve as audio feedback of a photo being taken, but also as a way to match the expectations of users who are familiar with the audio cues that come with mechanical cameras.
