I don’t actually know any physics but I think you’re mistaken about the up-energy being the same as the down-energy. At the peak of its flight it’s not moving at all— 0% kinetic, 100% potential energy. Then it starts falling and the only thing acting on it at that point is gravity and like, air resistance I guess? All the power from the explosion is gone and it’s the same as if you just dropped it from that height. But I would also expect it to get dented in that case so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
