We teach "level of force + 1" at work when it comes to self defense, for this reason exactly. They come at you swinging, you put their ass down. So long as it's evident you did everything reasonable to try and avoid violence, I'm not going to blame someone for defending themselves.
Anyone with any sense is genuinely terrified right now. What's about to happen could save us (probably a temporary measure, at that) or doom us to fail. This is the year we find out the true values of the American people.

I'm 36. I've lived most of my life feeling shame, guilt, bitterness, and rage after experiencing SA myself. I get making safe processes (cause children certainly don't need access to it), but the requirements in this law aren't practical. It's purely an effort to enforce religious beliefs on the population. They don't mind their youth leaders fondling children in their churches.
