Australia had an Equestrian Olympian sit in at their Olympic committee office because the org paid for bocycles and kayaks, and other gear to travel but not her horse. iirc they EVENTUALLY agreed to send the horse but not help for return... which is even hard with Australian regulations. Last summer Olympics some celeb paid rent for a usa fem (relevant for female sports getting lower pay and attn) Olympian.
I don't know the context or intent of that comment, but there is a lot of cost to Olympians and the US is a higher bar between health care and competition. Travel for competition is expensive, PLUS winter sports themselves have a short season for training if you don't trade hemispheres. It may be too much money to give up/return, but it might not be as much as it seems. How much goes to taxes too, being airlifted, and that athletes have short working years duration. Plus all the youth coaching
