My numbers were from the 2019 (most recent data I could find) total global education and space expenditures, not just US federal budget.
Let's take all of the money spent on space each year, including all government and private spending, and spend it on education. For the price of every scientific, weather, telecom, and military satellite, along with the ISS and every deep-space mission, we could increase the education budget by around 4%.
They got the plans from R2-D2, studied them for a couple of hours, and saw the flaw. The same designs the imperial engineers had for years without noticing anything.
The flaw was hidden well enough to be missed by all of the imperials for years, but obvious enough for the rebels to spot it within a few hours. Makes sense to me.
It was fun to try to dive and find the irregularities.
