Unfortunately we live in a "If I didn't see it, it doesn't exist" kind of world so most people just assume nothings being done.

Well the difference there is that every every diner was segregated, these people are loosing business to boycotts and other shops.
This case being the exception, vigilantism causes a LOT of problems. Justice is relative and an individual cannot be judge-jury-executioner.
You know people just drop dogs at farms right? Its actually super common and farmers cant support every abandoned dog.
Divorce court is more expensive than that even. So unless you've got got a prenup, it maybe a good idea to even attempt to remedy.

Have never existed in a vacuum. Its impossible to say for sure if any economic system would work sans-support and allies.
