You can support the gay community without being gay. I do. First step is not accepting words like 'gay' or 'homo' as an insult. There's nothing wrong with gay people so those words aren't / shouldn't be insults. De-weaponising those words is one thing we can do for the gay community. When you meet a trans person for the first time it's good to be empathic about the fact that they have probably experienced a lot of hostility and negativity from strangers which could make them a bit more wary / careful / hesitant / distrustful.
