I half agree with you, but I also think that's being a bit over-selective. The situation between OP and the guy looks like a lack of communication skills on both ends, and I'm inclined to sympathize with that.

I don't think calculating such things is wrong in itself. We need to be able to face that figure, 700m, and decidedly declare that watching that eclipse is worth at least a billion.
