I did it all the way to the head. A person on every step. One step up every 15 to 30 seconds. In a copper box. In August. The head is smaller than you think. There really is only room for about six "friends" up there. And of course, you want to take a bit and soak in the view and the experience.

Last time I took my kids there - probably in the mid-80s - there was a sign at the entrance to the statue - at the top of the pedestal - that said "Inside temperature 112º/90 minutes to the top." We turned and walked!

Did it this year. They've completely changed it (for safety reasons?) to a reservation system requiring you sign up months in advance. I recall doing it as a kid for like 2-3 hours - it is nothing like that now. In February we were to the top in 30 minutes, had all the time we wanted. Talked to the rangers, took in the views for 10+ minutes. This was after our prev trip to NYC not realizing and trying to climb it then with only a few weeks notice and not being able to.

The stairs are also remarkably small. I think I was like, size 12 shoes at the time (teenager) and had to walk up kinda sideways to be able to actually keep on the steps.
I don't think I'd be able to do it now.

That’s why I have literally never lived on the first floor of any building ever. I have probably stayed in a hotel room on the first floor a few times in my life, but I have never lived on a first floor. My childhood home had my bedroom at the top of the first flight of stairs, and you had to go up an additional 5 steps to get to the rest of the second floor of the house. It was like that because it was a remodeled house.
