I’m a college dropout, with underwhelming intelligence, and I have a mild grasp of English and computers. I have been using Linux since (fuck, I actually forgot the year windows 8 came out). My point being, don’t shell out cash for microslop; get you a nice, stable distro of Linux, and feel the freedom of open source software.

Linux has come a long way. Linux Mint isn't a Windows lookalike, but is one of the most intuitive beginner-friendly distros out there. Most things can be done just using the GUI without messing with typed-in commands. Windows, mouse, icons, menus, pretty familiar to Windows/Mac users.
And unlike Windows, Linux updates itself transparently in the background, and never requires a reboot, contains no spyware, no AI, and doesn't try to seize control of your PC from you.

From my point of view steam can throw all the money they want into Linux and it won't change much. Too many tools to manage things like billing, and system databases for equipment from companies like Bosch and Honeywell and General Electric whom are far far bigger names than steam will at least keep my job tethered to windows for thr foreseeable future until those sort of big names start investing in Linux too, or at least make their software friendlier to wine Microsoft will carry on.

Windows has this feature where if you skip the update enough times, the next time you go to select "shutdown" it's replaced with "Update and Shutdown." I'm sure there's setting buried super deep in the OS that prevents updates forever, but otherwise I think the only other course of action is holding the power button.

I am using Nobara and it does a neat thing of keeping a couple previous versions bootable with each update. That way if a new update borks something there is no fiddling around with it for a rollback or restore. You just reboot, and when the menu presents 3 options just boot an earlier one. I have not had anything break myself but its nice to have just in case.

Switched to linux mint a month ago, and so far haven't had any major rough spots. Nothing a quick google search hasn't helped me resolve. Games just work thanks to steam, in 90% of cases. A lot of major software has a linux version, and there are alternatives for those that don't.
Also if you have an older laptop that you just use for browsing and basic tasks (including productivity), linux cuts the resource overhead by a huge margin. It's not a bloated mess.

I used Linux on servers for my whole career, about 25 years. I tried Linux a few times on my home desktop but never made it stick.
Finally about 4 years ago Windows pissed me off enough to try again.
The current version of Linux Mint made it easy for me to switch. It's actually easier to set up and use than Windows is, and the hardware support is better - several devices I have just work under Linux, but under Windows are a pain to get working right.

I have a $200 CAD Asus laptop that i have Ubuntu Studio running on. Audio recording works better than my windows 10 desktop that outweighs it in every measure, including 32gb vs 8gb ram, later generation processor, namebrand ssd vs amazon cheap as was available trash, etc. It's a learning curve, but i enjoy it. Doesn't replace the desktop for gaming, but for everything else it's as good with worse specs.

For my 2012 laptop, I installed mint as well. On windows 10 I'd have nothing but a browser with a half dozen tabs open and it'd be hitting 95+% memory usage within a couple hours. On linux, same browser setup (backed up and restored my user profile and tabs), discord, spotify, etc and it clocks in at around 60%.

I have not had a single multiplayer game have problems (or at least, ones that seen to be Linux related). I've played: Space Marine II, Helldivers 2, Guild Wars 2, Deadlock, YAPYAP, Split Fiction, Speed Freeks, Void Crew, Jump Ship, RV There Yet, Orcs Must Die Deathtrap, Satisfactory, Necesse, Baldur's Gate 3, Borderlands 2.
And that's just the multiplayer ones I've played since switching (approx a year or so ago). There will be games that have issues, but man so many just do not.

I will warn, it's competitive games that are more likely to have anticheat that simply does not work on linux. So I've heard Valorant doesn't work. My list of games definitely includes a few competitive ones, but it's mostly just PvE or similar.

Dang I have been using microsoft since DOS 6.22, I drew a line in the sand and have a windows 10 image that I block from updating, AI or communication with Microsoft servers. I will never touch a new version, which means I better get familiar with the penguin.

I have found Fedora to be very comfortable leaping from win10. I specifically use the KDA plasma DE (Desktop Environment) version of it. Fedora is pretty stable while still keeping up with new features as they develop, and it's very friendly with Flatpaks, which are a sort of containerized system for applications which is probably the safest way to install things on a computer.
Fedora with KDE is *boring* in how easy it is. I was honestly expecting to have to do a bunch more to get it to work.

Mint (Simple and convenient), CachyOS (focus on minimalism and speed), Bazzite (if you are gaming focused and want console like experience), Nobara (if gaming, streaming, editing, and design are forefront) And with pretty much any of these use the KDE Plasma desktop cause it will feel the most like windows if that is what you are after for a smooth transition.

I do not sadly. Have not used them. But my most important advice is to look for what you need. There is probably a distro for it. And there are plenty of tech testing channels who do side by side comparisons of various distros.

Been looking pretty hard at Bazzite. Reaper (DAW) has a Linux build, but I've seen folks have issues with VSTs built for Windows. I play guitar as a hobby for fun. I'm not going to lose money if my favorite virtual amp doesn't work... but I really like the stuff I'm currently using. Also need to make sure MakeMKV and Handbrake work, but it seems like they do. I should check out Nobara.

Not that I use it really but I did have it downloaded. The only extra step to making it run (In Nobara) was to right click and then select "Run in Konsole" and it gave me the options for readme, run, install, and desktop integration. I just hit run and this popped up

I went minty later last year on my workstation. Likely going to do the same on this Win11 laptop I love or try another disty. I've found my love of computing again. Installing is easy, it's the rest after that comes with a little elbow grease. You'll feel really happy with yourself as you make little discoveries that had a bit of friction. It's hard to describe.

The first thing that was great was not be forced to update, then the package manager, not having to go to every website to download software. Then being able to customize the hell out of plasma, multiple bars behaving differently on each monitor, stuff like that. Also window controls, having them always open in the right spot and the right size, Spotify was an issue for me for this on windows.
Everything just working out of the box as well, every game I play works too, some with proton.

Finally? If you swapped to Windows 11 for anything other than your work demands it I think you are a bit of a chump. There's distros for a LOT. With custom kernels. Vet your installs but like holy crap there is pretty much 0 reason to to be using Windows anymore. There is even flatpak repositories that are just click install. Update managers that you can pick what and when to update. And programs like Bottles for running windows native programs just fine. I left the moment Win10 support dropped.

I mean I only DL from the official sites/servers. But getting summaries from people who do extensive testing on the different distros is handy. I focused on privacy and gaming performance myself and I follow a large number of tech head youtubers and such and if they all generally agree that its safe and performs well I test it. The biggest turn off of Linux is the inability to use only buttons like in Windows. Linux still requires the use of a terminal and manually writing commands, even in non-complex tasks.

No absolutely not. Whoever is telling you that is a liar. Most tasks can be achieved without touching a terminal window (Yay flatpak/appimage/sh). There are SOME programs for niche applications that MIGHT require you to right click them and run them in the terminal... but from there its a text prompt with simple options like y/n 1/2/3/4 or simple letter codes. I just looked at Reaper DAW and to be fair it needed a terminal. But it had 4 options. V(iew readme) R(un) I(nstall) A(dd) all explained.

Open the location with the folder or file you want. Click and drag to the place you want the shortcut. When you release a menu will open. Click "Link Here" and done.

It is quite possible that I am wrong, since my use was about 5 years ago, and I used Ubuntu, and some tasks required a terminal, but the tasks were one-time tasks for setting up certain ways of interacting with the system. But there were many such tasks, over and over again I came across something that I didn’t like and tried to change it. Overall the experience was still positive. I will try again because I really want a good alternative to Win!

Can confirm. Even tested it for folks flying the pirate flag, it's pretty rare to find a game that *doesn't* run. So even a somewhat niche case can be solved with stuff like Bottles + Flatseal.
I'm actually using CachyOS on my main computer these days, it's been surprisingly reliable and I'm loving it!

I had to learn new things. Installing software is both way easier and more complicated. As a windows user I was used to installation wizards. In linux there's a variety of ways, flatpacks, docker images, repositories. GUI installation is still a thing but there's also CLI installs. More options feels daunting at first, familiarity over time will come.
Dependencies can be annoying until you get comfortable with CLI. With Linux, there's always more than one way to solve a problem though. Worth it

Well Linux is pretty much always "text based functional barebones operating system", that then has strong culture of modularity and graphical and so packages being built on top of it, with strong culture of there being large amount of available alternatives tailored to different needs and preferences.
So would consider it very unlikely it would go to that kind of direction... especially since base stuff and most popular stuff is generally licensed in way that they will remain free and available.

So even if some commercial version would raise, or some earlier option would branch into commercial version, community and whoever would be able to just continue from point just before branching and develop to new free alternatives, with strong culture of licensing it in way that others can branch out from those if they want.

Its been delayed and you can literally buy a miniPC right now and install Linux on it. Bazzite and Nobara are both pretty much feature complete and will cost less and probably be just as fast or faster than whatever the Steam Machine will be (unless they completely update the spec and even then new miniPCs will be out.) Get one with an Oculink port and be able to plug in a GPU you can buy later for better gaming and be set.

That literally does nothing to address what I said either. Most consumers dont or wont want to, install linux on their own, much less build their own PC. It's not about the price, it's about ease of access and standardization. Steam supporting a specific distro will also push more people into the Linux space as well, meaning more devs will start supporting it out of necessity. You cant just use price as the sole factor.
