I agree 100%. Some day I hope our politics are inane enough that it's just kind of an annoyance to see them on social media, but until then, it's critical people know what's going on.

The people that need to see it aren't looking

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I fucking hate it, but nowhere near as much as I hate Fascism and ICE

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

same

it is

This execution has managed to completely overshadow the fact Trump is sending an armada to Iran as we speak. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5702855-donald-trump-warns-iran-armada/

Honestly seeing unedited footage being uploaded is the best thing when this stuff comes up because all the news channels will heavily edit them in one way or another.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I want to call the new owners out: they are letting us vent here, far more than i expected. We may not always agree on the limits, but I like the fact that we can get these posts to most viral.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't realize murder was political now

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't call this political, more straight up murder and the subjugation of a people. Politics is figuring out how much of the budget should go into road construction vs education.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is there a way of blocking US politics from my feed?

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the way I see it, law enforcement acting as terrorists shooting at innocent people indiscriminately doesn't really count as "politics"

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

"Politics is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of status or resources." -Wikipedia

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes. I don't want to see another single video of that man being killed. But I applaud the fact that it's being reposted every few minutes here and elsewhere.

We've crossed the Rubicon. The Status Quo has changed.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I agree but people should tag their posts!

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Covering what happens right now and rallying to take action against it is different than the last 8 years of memes passively whining about Trump. Crucially different.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not political when the fake police murder citizens GOD DAMNIT

It used to be much more fun here a few years ago, but the insanity has to be shown to all and faced soberly.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At this point, it's more akin to trying to save and warn people about an active tornado outside.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Important stuff like I.C.E. executing a civilian, not every dipshit bot account posting A.I. Trump memes. There is a world of difference.

2 months ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 9

It's still ok and important in cases where the White House voluntarily, willfully and deliberately attempted to mislead viewers by posting an *altered photo* depicting activist Nekima Levy Armstrong crying during her arrest..
Your tax dollars at work.

2 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

That pretty clearly isn't what I was referencing, though.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think they were agreeing and just using your statement to criticize the regime.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed. This is important. Some of this shit needs to be known far and wide, especially considering we can often get more trustworthy accounts here than a lot of mainstream media. It's not sanewashed here and we get many perspectives. I also really appreciate that this is a global platform. I like knowing how the rest of the world is reacting to some of this bullshit.

Imgur now is all politics, anime, and boobs. I'm still here but it's kinda underwhelming.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

JUsT SeArCh fOr tHe COnTeNt YoU wAnT, my brothers in Christ, the fun part of Imgur used to be stumbling upon delightful shit I didn’t know existed.

Welcome to social media- where posts are dictated by what is going on within society/social circles.

Sorry you want to escape by going to social media, but you're wrong for trying to. Go outside or find an actual hobby if you want to escape. Social media isn't it.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If I had any confidence that any poster flooding the front page is who they present as (Americans and humans), I would agree. I have none.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm human, but Canadian. Just painfully aware and read too much

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd argue that the current flood of posts isn't political, at all. Politics is a discussion about policy. What we are seeing is government terrorization and murder of our fellow citizens.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

"Politics is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of status or resources." -Wikipedia

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

So yes- murder is not politics.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

ICE murdering citizens (and non-citizens for that matter) is “power relations among individuals”.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Can't have relations if the other party is dead- so agree to disagree.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But muh safe space!

2 months ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 16

I get the joke, and the response to those people is 'We are telling you this specifically because, based on current events, no space is safe, and you need to act accordingly.'

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I know you're being sarcastic as part of the joke, but too many people are willing to ignore the atrocities happening just because they're not close to them

2 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 10

"I just want a break from politics!!! I see it everywhere!!!"

That's the fuckin' point, this shit isn't normal. The second people shut up about it it becomes normalized. I'm sorry we have to keep reminding you, hypothetical whiner, that extrajudicial killings are happening in greater frequencies, whole groups are having rights stripped away, and that the regime has decided laws don't apply to them, but if you decide to tune it out and ignore it, you become part of the problem.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

You understand that I am very much for the posting of political stuff until it gets fixed, right?

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Yeah, sorry, was just agreeing and adding in.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I wish I didn't have to see it. It's across the world from me. But the US is going to drag the whole world down kicking and screaming with it.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

To be clear, we are WAY past politics. This is an ideological war now.

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Which is... drum roooooolllll... POLITICS!

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This is just decency vs evil

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The war has not started yet thankfully but the way things going that won't take long.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure, but some of us don't live in the States and can't do fuck all about the situation. Which is not to say that one shouldn't be informed! But this propaganda barrage on a meme site is crazy. Because that's what it is, per definition. Right or wrong has nothing to do with it. Yes, Trump is a crazy animal and the people backing him are insane. I know this already. I don't come here to be force fed US politics. There has to be a balance to other content.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I don't live in the states. But being on the border, I'm kinda interested in what's happening. Shut your moose holster

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You'll still be good on anti Trump & friends rhetoric as well as actual news even if there's 75% memes and interesting stuff on FP. It's out of proportion rn and lots of people are leaving. Just my honest opinion. But, +1 for moose holster.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This isn't politics anymore. It isn't political to say that peaceful protesters and civilians should not be shot.

This is now a matter of people standing up for what is truly good and just.

You can debate immigration policy, you can debate gun control.

I will not debate our citizens guaranteed right to protest, free speech, and being able to stand up for their beliefs without being murdered.

2 months ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 4

Agreed. I was all for marking the constant stream of anti-Trump shitposts (image macros with a few words in particular) with the politics tag; some people go on socials to get away, and it was killing the site when they flooded off.

But it's pretty dead now regardless, and this shit's gone straight into civil rights/civil war issues. I don't think OP needs to use the puffin for this one.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll scream with you. We're not debating how to spend fucking tax money here. I am on the warpath, looking for a fucking fight.

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

And the fact that the entire world is doing what they can.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Politics is about housing tax’s vs property taxes as a funding source for schools.

This is an existential threat that has permanently damaged America’s place in the world. And it gets worse day after day.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I absolutely agree with you. ALSO, Imgur isn’t a news site. Folks should still be able to come here for silly cat videos and random kooky shit for a brain break if they want (or need) it. If posts are tagged, it can still be both a news source and a respite.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh, for fuck's sake, it is political. Any right, down to the most basic right, is political. Everything, literally everything, that has to do with laws, right, and decisions for a group is political.

2 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

"Politics is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of status or resources." -Wikipedia

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Fucking thank you.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I just wish they could tag it appropriately, it's terrible, and I can't handle it anymore, I just need to escape - I'm not American, there's nothing more I can do than the boycott of supportive businesses, like Amazon, but I don't need to see a dude get killed over and over again, I'm done - I'm not saying don't post it, just tag it current events so I can opt out, I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling fragile..

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

I 100% believe it was one of the major reason for most of Imgur's user base being gone now. People came here to laugh, see silly things, interesting stuff, whatever helps them decompress. The swarm of depressing political news drove them away, and this anti-tag crowd explicitly trying to force them to see their posts made sure to chase them.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Then go outside. Social media reflects what is happening in society. It's not a safe space or an escape. Treating it as such is a bad idea.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is a good point. I know we use this site for just fun stuff but the nature of social media is a reflection of what's happening in society.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not saying it can't be, I'm saying for the love of god just use the tags, it's half the reason they exist. (the other half is so people interested in your content can find it, win fucking win)

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I get you're coming from a good place, but that statement is very ableist, I'm autistic, outside is not the calming escape you feel it is.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I am too, so cut the "ableist" crap. "Go outside" just was a way to say- find a different outlet. Draw, read, meditate, collect rocks, raise shrimp, skip rope, work out- it doesn't matter what activity, just do it. Stop hiding behind your autism as way to never go outside of your comfort zone.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

With all sincerity, fuck you

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Okay- doesn't change the fact you're using your autism as a shield against everything uncomfortable. Sorry that makes you upset. Learn to change, or accept that you are the problem. The world isn't made for people like us- we adapt or die.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You really think I enjoy being like this? If I could do literally else I fucking would, but thanks for your amazing insight that would never have occurred to me you privileged fuck

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Lashing out when you get told to find any other activity besides social media is pretty sad. Hope you find some other way to cope with the world. Because again- social media is not an escape.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct. There wouldn't be so much political shit on the FP if politics wasn't so completely fucking insane.

2 months ago | Likes 230 Dislikes 9

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Drives me insane how people can genuinely say "hey this is an existential threat" and the response is "ugggggh that makes me feel uncomfy, I don't wanna seeeeee it" like bruh I get it but we don't want to be living it, feel?

2 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

True (autoCorrect change that to trite for some reason).

Look at Imgur fo from 2009-2015 compared to this last year.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm 34 and I've gone through about as many "once in a lifetime" events as I can handle. They shouldn't have all happened in my lifetime.

I was born on the day the USSR officially fell apart in the Soviet Union, and it just went downhill from there

2 months ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 2

Nah 90s was great, wasn't perfect but there were rapid advancements and general improvements. 00's is where it took a turn.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a phrase that has lost its meaning related to the political dumpster fire that is the last decade. Escalating heavily this past year obviously.

2 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I’m born ‘81 and been there through them too. The late 90s was a kinda high that I can’t disentangle from my youth. I pin a fair bit of the downward spiral on SCOTUS installing W. Which probably coincides with many of your early memories.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Definitely the first time I ever heard anything important about politics. Also, was in grade 3 and had moved to Canada 16 months ago not knowing English yet

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm 35, and . . . yup.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

None of them should've happened in anybody's lifetime, but ethics or empathy have never been a part of the rich people's understanding.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who knew how right the matrix was gonna be that the late 90s was gonna be the peak of human civilization.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

i would've gotten lynched in the late 90's for dressing the way i dress, so nah, as much ppl meme about it i'd like to remind you gais it's not exactly true

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait, you think you won't get lynched for how you dress the wrong place right now?

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm talking about our presidents. At least they PRETENDED to be sane in the past. They tried to present themselves in a manner worthy of the office- they didn't go out of their way to piss off anyone that didn't get down on their knees and kiss their ass the way this current clown does.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was born in the USSR, grew up in Canada.
I just care about what happens to the rest of the world too

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Happy to get downvoted to oblivion for this, but I respectfully disagree in the context of untagged posts. I think everyone should know about these things, but constantly forcing it on people isn't fair. I go to reputable news outlets for this kind of news, and then come to imgur and social media as a break to help my brain reset because I can't help fight this shit if I'm so depressed that I unalived myself. I'm not uninformed, I just can't take the constant barrage of propaganda here.

2 months ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 18

Happy to get down voted to oblivion here as well for this. Users living in other countries exist as well. I am Canadian, I literally can't physically help y'all. Canada has its own problems I need to help with, per my civic duty. Virtually, we all know a comment chain won't change a maga person's mind. I understand Americans make up the bulk of imgur, but damn I want memes T^T

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I get your point, but you can't escape this sort of thing with social media. Since this is what's going on in our society, it's going to be the sort of posts that people are posting. It's really important for them to post it and it is not propaganda. To seek an escape from it for your own wellbeing is completely healthy and reasonable and I think anyone who's feeling that way should do so, but social media is not the place to find that escape

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

I like the idea of tagging, until you get the part where it literally just makes it easier for bots to bot on politics when it's tagged. I genuinely don't know what the solution for that is, though.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Notice how you get no downvotes

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 7

Spamming this kind of content on imgur isn't going to suddenly make the people who don't care about politics care about politics, and it's making those of us who used to be able to use imgur as a place to take a break and look at OC and cats use the sight less and less. I KNOW that these political and social issues matter, but I cannot consume them constantly and I don't appreciate that I don't have the option of consent when you want to show me an execution video for the 35th time today.

2 months ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 10

I also 100% agree, Imgur was a refugee, it was international. The vast majority of us globally hate to see what's happening in America, but constant repetitive American politics and current murdering regime is mentally draining. I've been down voted many times before for advocating the need to tag. Imgur used to be a wonderful place to escape from all the madness of the world, sadly it has been lost it with the new ownership. There are but glimmers that bring me back.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I 100% believe it was one of the major reason for most of Imgur's user base being gone now. People came here to laugh, see silly things, interesting stuff, whatever helps them decompress. The swarm of depressing political news drove them away, and this anti-tag crowd explicitly trying to force them to see their posts made sure to chase them.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I understand where you’re coming from , I truly do but you’ll find entertainment in other places. This is incredibly important, more important than stress relief. Trust me, I miss the old Imgur too but nothing lasts forever

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Yes. Real world hobbies, or art websites, or streaming platforms will provide distraction from the news, much better than trying to find the old imgur from 12 years ago.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

I have plenty of other health outlets and hobbies. But I don't appreciate being told "this site has been taken over by politics so just go somewhere else and don't fight for what you want to see". That's literally the attitude that got this country to where it is now so sorry if I won't bend over and take it.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

yes, well said

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I agree to an extent. It's important to tag, but it's hard to ignore so much that's happening. I know it's very USA centric, and I don't even live there. But this is also a risk to everyone. Right wing sides are getting way too much support all over the world nowadays because the worst people are better united.

2 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 9

Yes. This is an international crisis. The Cold War has been won by Russia- who are now so comfortable on the international stage, that they can blatantly and bald-facedly run The United States of America with puppet strings.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I get your point that it's hard to ignore but my point is exactly that, I'm not ignoring it. I'm TRYING to choose when I digest it and when I take healthy breaks. And posting this kind of content untagged doesn't allow me to consent to when I consume it.
I've heard the popular "everyone has to see this" argument, but 1. It ignores consent and 2. The people who NEVER want to see it are going to continue ignoring it. You're just overwhelming those of us trying to help.

2 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 6

1) Build a list of meme posters that I follow so I get notified of their posts, and when I can't tolerate the dumpster fire, visit their posts only
2) Eyes on the title only, quick scan, don't wanna see it? Swipe past it.
3) I've blocked a massive amount of the politics-only posters
4) Cruise various memes discords.
5) s3nd.pics instead.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Say your country is at war, committing war crimes, and you're a war correspondent helping expose it. You're back home trying to relax (in a park, restaurant terrace, etc.) and everywhere, protesters move through with signs with graphic photos of the war. Do you ask them to go protest in a walled off yard marked "war protest" so people can choose when to view that or not? I get times are difficult, but Imgur is an open platform, it's sadly not feasible that open/social spaces be a refuge.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I understand your point, however:
I humbly suggest an outdoor activity or an art/craft, or game, instead of seeking out the internet to relax. Social media sites are not places of relaxation, and that's proven by science. If you are overwhelmed by news, due to seeing it on social media, excuse yourself from the metaphorical room, and get off the internet, to take a break. You are much more likely to find positive distractions from politics, if you are not on the internet.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

/2 What I'm trying to say, in a nutshell, is; Real world hobbies, or art websites, or streaming platforms will provide distraction from the news, much better than trying to find the old imgur from 12 years ago. Imgur is, for the time being, essentially a rogue news website, for the moment. Be well.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Respectfully, consent on the internet amounts to "I choose to visit the site." Yeah, imgur's curation options suck, but they exist. You can search by specific tags. You can block the political-posting users. Reddit allows you to make custom feeds. Etc.

It's not the job of others to curate your experience. That's on you.

What I do when cruising for memes and avoiding the dumpsterfire:

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I can't curate my experience when people don't follow the rules though. I've blocked hundreds and hundreds of accounts that spam political crap. Some people don't use tags and some intentionally use incorrect but popular tags to try to get more views.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I get it. Unfortunately, business daddy has basically guaranteed that any tools we might have had aren't going to be coming, and the soft rules will never be followed. It really sucks.

I felt your same frustration around this time last year. Bit of a pissing up a rope in the wind situation.

Well, enjoy this terrible joke. Hope it brightens your day a bit.
