Same boat. I've tried so many tricks. Liquids, even with straws, never worked. I'm subconsciously convinced I will choke. Recently discovered soilds are a workaround. Does not matter what it is, really. If it is something I can chew first, I can swallow pills fine. Pop the pill in after chewing, or just chew the other food without chewing it.
Got an arm caught in one as a kid. Lost some skin, got a little scar from it. I wouldn't recommend it.
Not just the GOP base. The older generations grew up on anti socialism and communism during the cold War. It stuck both left and right.
