FWIW, the post office is now a separate entity– spun off by the Republicans who want to privatize it. In general, the US government can’t bail them out. Then again, if they really wanted to, they could.Republicans have been trying to bankrupt the post office for decades. That is they want private industry to get the work. Forcing the post office to fully fund all pensions, unlike any other government enterprise, i.e. Social Security, has bought the post office to this financial point
