This was the way to do it because Windows system updates had (have?) a tendency to nuke grub and make the Linux system unreachable until you do a recovery install. For awhile it was two separate drives, and you unplugged the Linux drive before updating Windows.
My Panasonic cd changer from 1992 died last year after we moved. The main stereo unit still works though.
Way back in the final years of the previous millennium, all of Symantec's products would register a dll in Windows. When you uninstalled the app, it would remove the dll but not unreg it, so on your next boot Windows would show a full-screen warning that an iMpOrTaNt FiLe was missing and you should install it again.

Back in the last millenium, I used a program called Proxomitron. It was a web proxy server than ran on your machine and allowed you to create filters that changed websites as you browsed them. Lots of ad services had "begin ad" and "end ad" comments around them in the code, so you could just delete everything between them. I'm sure there's something similar available now but I can't be bothered to look since UBO and Greasemonkey do what I need.
Don't leave out the part where we put lightning in the runes to activate them.
