Resident Evil on PS1 didn't have 3D background, just images with 3D characters and interactive objects on top. The stuttering between cameras is the framebuffer getting filled with a full screen image saturating the bandwith between sysram (2Mb) and Vram (1Mb). The doors are a loading screens from the CD to sysram: each section between each "door" is in fact background images per section. The goal was to cut in chunks to optimize loading CD -> sysram -> Vram and make the game looking gigantic.
