Popping in the head with a shovel doesn't feel like a de-escalation. Not entering before the police would be de-escalating imho. What's the worst that can happen? Some smashed flower pots, a table flipped and maybe the TV on the floor?

Wouldn't it be easier to protect? You can cover it in dirt to make targetting harder and have AA cover it (probably not easier/cheaper or they would have done so already)
New or 2nd hand changes little to the outcome. You'll pay more in parts, maintenance (your time or a mecanic's) and fuel efficiency. Other costs (like insurance, parking,...) remain the same regardless of whether your car was bought new or 2nd hand. Cars are expensive.
