Exactly this. When snow sits around in piles, it can compact itself to ice on the bottom layers. Having a chunk of ice strike the horizontal during takeoff could be catastrophic. De-icing is a simple, routine procedure and therefor this is unnecessarily dangerous, as I already pointed out.
That plane 100% should have been de-iced before takeoff. Super dumb and unnecessarily dangerous.
