Id bet its a lower binned version of a higher tier drive. It probably doesnt meet the higher tier speed for whatever reason and instead of scrap they can make a new sku and sell then as cheaper drives. They make more than scrap value but they obviously dont go out of their way to produce stock of these.
If the cost of college wasnt life crippling and was available to all people sure WAY more people would take advantage of it. Also when companies list Master degrees as minimum and then offer $15/hr..... kinda devalues that and the Bachelors degree even more...

If they dont live close where you can troubleshoot issues it becomes way too much trouble. I could log them into a smart tv or roku and thats as hard as it gets. No hate on Jellyfin and if you have younger or more techy end user then A+.
I wanted to try Jellyfin after the plex lifetime price hike earlier this year but the ease of use was a lot lower for non tech savy end users so I couldnt justify trying. I just picked up plex lifetime on black friday deal but still seeing plex move away from what users seem to want is disappointing.
Oh yeah definitely not something to leave around long term as its still acid. I just wanted to add to your comment as a lot of people only know lead acid batteries as car batteries so the person questioning didnt think that OP had puddles of acid everywhere.
Certain Home Depot stores will take these for free. Ive dropped off 50 at a time and they happily take them.
Also they are not liquid cell batteries. These batteries are AGM (absorbed glass mat) so the normally liquid acid is not able to pour out like a car battery. Yes its still not good to have the cases busted open but they arent going to have a puddle of acid to deal with at least.
I have to full screen the video then unmute. I think there is a problem with gifs showing audio unmute button but actual video file formats not until full screen trick after a recent update.
