Notice The Wire and Breaking Bad finished with season 5...

Six seasons and a movie!

So bad at the end. But so good in the beginning and middle.

Cast contract negotiations at series 5 put them on about a mill per hour broadcast. Someone gets weird about it.

Bob's Burgers is holding up fairly well

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The Venture Brothers also made it to 7 seasons without even a slight dip in quality, if anything it only got better over time.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

It took 15 years to make 7 incomplete seasons. You aren’t seriously trying to claim that counts, are you?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Their continuity and story telling got so much better as the seasons progressed - couldn't agree more with you

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Babylon 5 had a slightly different trajectory: S1 - We've planned out for 5 seasons, including allowing for trapdoors to replace key actors

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

if they need to leave. S2-3 - Still going according to plan. S4 - The network changed, said we're being cancelled. Gotta wrap everything up

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ASAP. S5 - Uh, we were told midway through S4 that we were getting S5. Plotlines have already been force-ended, some actors have already

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

accepted other jobs. Filler! Filler!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But even though the sets and CG were horrible, this show is one of my favs. Underneath the low budget shell is so much gold.

All I could think of while reading this was this show lol. Such a shame how long it went on

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

I feel like I'm one of the few who's genuinely enjoyed it from start to finish. Even if I didn't care for the ending much.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I love the concept, love the characters. IMO it would have been a phenomenal ending if it stopped just before the angels fall.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can understand that. I know I still enjoyed it even after the Fall. Just interesting to see the different opinions on it, y'know?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seinfeld is an outlier

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

Is it? Seasons 3, 4, and 5 are often considered the best, 1 and 7 the worst

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'd say 1 and 6. 7 usually ranks among the best (4-5). 8 and 9 get silly but still very funny with a lot of classics. Ended when it needed

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For me, that show started out unwatchable and ended the same with no change throughout. Obviously others disagree.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Glad I’m not the only one

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I don’t know. Season 1 is rough. They had a nice golden period but you can tell when Larry David leaves and the A &B plots don’t meet up as

GOT's comes to mind

4 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 3

Yeah, good thing they stopped at season 7.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Slightly different beast as there is a correlation between it struggling to stay good & lack of source material.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also the creators wanting to wrap up the show in one season even though HBO offered them another one so that they could do star wars, which

They should've also been tarred and feathered.

GoT is a bit different, as it was good up until the point where the books ended, then had a couple of decent episodes while the overall 1/

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

GoT started going downhill long before they ran out. Mostly because they made small changes with big ripples that they couldn't deliver on.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wasn't bad then, but it definitely got weaker. S5 was especially meh. And S6's style wasn't far from S7-8, it was just better written.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

plot and character quality were in freefall. For example, the fact that every intelligent character suddenly stopped actually DOING 2/

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

intelligent things and instead did seemingly random things that somehow worked out, while other characters talked about how smart they were.

I was thinking of Blackadder, especially the first season fits really well. After that it was pure gold and stopped at it's Zenith.

And many other British shows. 100 episodes in the US is standard, 100 in the UK is extremely rare.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Depends on the genre really. Our soap operas typically go for obscene lengths of time. Coronation Street is on like 10000 episodes

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Serial dramas like that barely count though, as pretty much the entire cast aside from a few fan favourites rotate out every few years or so

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

UK does also have the world's longest running sitcoms, with Last of the Summer Wine (295 episodes) and Chucklevision (292).

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read somewhere (TVTropes?) that ~100 eps are needed for US syndication, without which it's seen as a failure.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. Pure gold all the way through.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Supernatural

4 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 1

It got better once Kripke got back into it. Still not seasons 1-5, but not seasons 6/7 either

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Honestly Supernatural becoming a zombie was an entirely appropriate fate

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I kinda enjoyed the worsening of supernatural.

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I found it weird that everyone started watching it after season 7, which was when it died for me.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The ending was pretty sweet vs. The quality of the later seasons

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Should have ended when Sam got trapped in The Cage

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

that was the original end. but it was popular so it kept going

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fair, they totally embraced jumping the shark. The real story was done by the fourth season and then they just decided to have fun (1)

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

and go crazy. It's really enjoyable if you watch with the mentality that past season 4, it's essentially just the writers ripping a bong (2)

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

hit and going "duude, imagine if we killed death and had a mega-satan appear that's actually god?" And everyone going along with it.(3)

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

OH and what if we have Hitler come back so Dean can kill him, oh oh and give him a grenade launcher

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Crazy how GoT managed to cram seven seasons worth of ruination into just a few episodes.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Stargate SG-1 was pretty good til the end. They didn't wrap it up, just implied they'd be working next day but we wouldn't get to see now

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

That's because they got a movie promise and thought more would come. Also SGA was on and popular.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which end? Season 8 or season 10? I felt season 8 was a perfect ending. Season 10, not so much.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Season 8 was supposed to be the ending. Then they got a surprise renewal...followed by a surprise cancelation

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They kept making endings because they didn't know the show wasn't being canceled. So the writes kept writing endings then boom got contracts

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For a new season.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True but basically all conflicts were resolved by season 8 and the team was relaxing together and fishing. Pleasant end. Then they made 1/

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

season 9. Needed new conflicts and a new big bad (since the Goa'uld were defeated). Main star didn't return so they needed a new lead. 2/

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 seasons of Ori couldn't beat the 8 that Goa'uld got even if the Ori felt like more of a threat. Season 9-10 felt like a spin-off. 3/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Season 10 was screwed because they weren’t meant to be cancelled. SyFy screwed them over and refused to let them move networks post s10

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Originally they were gonna be Apples flagship in house series, but Syfy said no, and they were forced to go to movies

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Buuuut Amazon just bought MGM and stargate and the rumours are we’ll see in canon shows start back up soon.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't Syfy just push past season 8 to get to season 10 JUST for some kind of record? And once the record was achieved, they ditched SG1?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty much, I watched a recent interview with one of the producers; S11 was planned and plotted, and Syfy pulled the rug & used contracts

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To kill any attempt to move it elsewhere and continue

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then did they replace SG1's slot with more wrestling....?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Walking Dead

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

That show was 11 seasons of the exact same plot, over and over again.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(srexec) show's getting stale. What can we do? (jrexec) spin offs with pretty much the same plots but different characters (sr) genius!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that only had two good seasons though

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh please. the first season was leagues better than the second, which was arguably the lowest point of the show.

Sitcom variation: by season 6 everyone's normal, are married and becomes a generic sitcom in themed t-shirts of the original premise.

4 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 0

Well, season 7 was still pretty good i think.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I always felt this saved Big Bang Theory. They got past the MOST EGREGIOUS “nerd farce” and let the characters marry/grow.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like it helped up to a point, then over time it just became a generic "work friends & family" sitcom.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With the only science references being meaningless technobabble & nerdy celeb cameos towards the end

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Point. “Saved” in my original comment should be read as “ears don’t bleed anymore when wife watches it.” It didn’t make it GOOD per-se.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

... or everyone's just flanderized beyond recognition and now solely consists of only one or two personality traits played up to eleven. 1/

Like how Joey in Friends went from not-too-bright but having some moments to borderline shouldn't-be-allowed-outside-alone levels of dumb.

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Not really a Friends-watcher but Joey had actual personality once? When? How? I only know Phoebe went from tragic backstory to "cookyspice".

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Well, he used to be sort of a shallow airhead with moments of streetsmarts and simple wisdom, but then devolved into "braindamaged caveman".

Buffy in a nutshell

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Season 4 walked so season 5 could run.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, Joss Whedon was pulling a Weinstein with his female actors on set, so yeah, things were bound to suffer because of it.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TWD

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Personally, I thought season 7 was stronger than 6, and actually has the characters returning to their original character development.

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

7 was stronger than 6. But the ending to 5 was the natural stopping point. Could have gone out with a bang. Any rewatch by me stops at 5.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The good girl turns bad scenario definitely shaped my life from that point onwards. Was like oh, fuck, I don't have to be the smart sensible

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

one, I too can skin a guy upside down on a tree and burn everything.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Season 7 was more consistently good, but season 6 had the better episodes. Once More With Feeling, Seeing Red, Villains, Two to Go, Grave.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Seasons 5 & 6 were probably my favourites. So many memorable moments.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Season 5 was absolutely brilliant. Some of the best episodes were in 4 and 6. But the best overall villain was Angelus, in season 2.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sad but true. Just watched the whole thing.. auch.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Did you watch the spinoff series Angel too?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to Deep Space Nine. While a little shaky at first, it did better and better each season.

4 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 3

Oh good. I'm like, 7 episodes in so more to look forward to!

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Most shows start shaky as everyone gets into the groove. DS9 got better -and- went out with a bang.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

S7 is still very much watchable, but I wouldn't ever call it better than 6.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dukat being turned from grey villain to moustache twirling crazy man was just terrible, but the dominion war in general was amazing.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And TNG of course. The phrase 'grew the beard' was created for a reason.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TNG grows the beard in Season 2, following exactly the pattern described in the meme.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also the Sisko Switch and Sheridan's beard in B5.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Interesting, thank you.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He originally shaved the beard & grew his hair out for the role bc they didn't want him to look like his role Hawk from Spenser for Hire.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Clearly a mistake; the show gets *markedly* better once he grows the beard back.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love that some shows like Gravity Falls are planned out from the start for all seasons and it ends well

4 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

Some high-level story beats may be planned out in advance, but anyone who says they planned out all the details of a show is lying.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, usually for the best. Same with Breaking Bad, and the fact that they had it planned (and said no to extra seasons) from the start.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Babylon-5 was the same way. Though the network kind of screwed with it by first not giving them their fifth season forcing them to try and

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

wrap stuff up, then giving it to them making them have to adjust a bunch of stuff.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think B5 was the first to try this approach. Hopefully, with the reboot, JMS can do S5 the way he originally wanted to.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just like Infinity Train! Oh wait.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Me too, though the tricky thing about that kind of situation is if the shows a big hit the network may want it to run longer, and if the >>

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

creative team won’t play ball the network may just replace them, leading to a similar “ghost of its former self” scenario.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah, the Babylon 5 experience. "Ratings suck, you get one less season." Wraps things up. "Ratings are up, we want season 5 now..."

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Was that what happened to Gargoyles?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Avatar and Korra prime examples. And Korra a prime example of when the network FUCKS with the plan mid production...

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But I thought she said she was "bicurious" in like one of the First episodes

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude literally the only thing LGBT the network allowed in Korra was handholding in the last shot of the whole series.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the rule34 artists fucking Ran with that one! :D

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Always Sunny - We're gonna get real weird with it, do some very experimental episodes, cut our season down and basically tell the fans -

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

- we're not quitting until they cancel us or we get bored.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Agreed - because they analyse and avoid and parody these exact things

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The awards episode and Old Lady House are great meta takes on other sitcoms.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes! The awards episode is one of my top faves taking the piss out of other programmes.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well well well well. If it isn't parks and rec beat for beat

4 years ago | Likes 327 Dislikes 16

Yeah I don’t watch the final season.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Also Mad Men. Also 30 Rock. Also TNG. Also…

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

TNG never really had a season that blew me away. Individual episodes absolutely but never really a whole season of "WOW!". DS9 though...

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ye, that’s fair. I feel like the spread of good episodes was at its peak around seasons 3 & 4, though.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And Sons of Anarchy

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And How I Met Your Mother.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

HIMYM is mediocre the whole time. Fight me.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll agree for the first half, but I loved the last season's, didn't break any stride for me

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Too old for most here, but MASH was great through to the end.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I was too young to experience its original run, but Cheers was great as well, and had a perfect finale...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean…yes but no. The first few years were a completely different show before Alda took over. Like *completely* different. And the last (1)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

few seasons kinda sucked. A few good episodes, a lot of going through the motions filler. It’s 11 seasons. Be honest with yourself.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Precisely what I was gonna say. Anyone who can survive the borefest that is S1 is in for a treat with their amazing subsequent seasons.

4 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

I think season 1 is great AFTER completing the entire show. Look back at characters that are now fleshed out to you.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

S1 is only six episodes, y'all make it sound like it has 2-3 times that.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Because it felt like 2-3 times that! Haha I did end up loving the show but had to try to start it 3 times

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Either way, S1 is definitely not one that makes you say “you know what, I wanna watch more of that”. When recommending Parks n Rec to 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

New viewers, I’m always compelled to say that they should not give up after S1 because I know that many will be inclined to. 2/2

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's pretty much what I'm saying, it's short enough to power through and the rest of the show is good enough to make up for it.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Season 2 thru 7 are good ! Unpopular opinion I like it more then The Office. Parks and Rec made me laugh more.

4 years ago | Likes 203 Dislikes 3

That's hopefully not an unpopular opinion. I certainly share it with you. Positivity and friendship beat out cringe every time.

4 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

I just finished rewatching it and I can concur. I did skip the first season since I really hate the preliminary Andy/Ann dynamic. 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

first season of both is bad, its ok to skip

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I think season 7 may be the best possible way it could have ended. The series finale really knocked it out of the park.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Agreed! One of the most conclusive series finales I’ve seen. Love everything about Parks & Rec. It’s so wholesome. Friends. Waffles. Work.
