Beds that have solid surfaces sticking out further out than the mattress are the worrrrrrrst design. All 4 edges of a bed should be nothing but soft surfaces. The 4 small legs of the underlying bedframe should be recessed by an inch or two so you don't stub your toes either

That sucks. Have you tried sleeping with ear plugs? It takes a night or two to get used to it, but once you do you'll never wanna go back to open ears even when you're sleeping in a quiet environment.
